11yr old has chronic bowel issues, rock hard stools

User Profile
I have an 11 year old son that has had chronic issues with his bowels. He experiences constipation, lower stomach or upper intestine burning sensations and nausea. He goes 3-4 days without having a bowel movement and he becomes very uncomfortable, this happens regularily at least once every two weeks. When he does have a movement it causes him a lot of pain and his stools are huge and hard sometimes causing him to bleed. I have taken him to our family doctor who prescibed him a liquid laxitive but that soon stopped working. I will take him back to ask that he be more thouroughly examined to determine what may be causing this. Do you have any idea what this could be caused from? What do you suggest I do to help eleviate my sons discomfort. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Welcome to ehealthforum and thanks for writing

The symptoms explained by you as constipation, nausea, burning and difficulty in bowel movements can be due to various causes as lack of fibre in diet, inadequate food, decreased intake of water, electrolyte and mineral deficiency or underlying medical conditions as Hypothyroidism, deranged blood sugar, cystic fibrosis etc.
He definitely requires a thorough examination along with investigations as USG scan,Colonscopy etc to rule out the exact cause.

Some suggestions:
1)Increase the fibre intake in diet as bran cereals, bran muffins, oats, wheat bread, wheat crackers.

2)Give more of water and juices, soups etc.

3)Increase fibre content as beans,sweet potatoes,tomatoes,popcorn etc.

4)Include lots of fruits and veggies in diet.

5)Consider giving stool softeners when required and avoid daily.

Kindly visit a child specialist for detailed evaluation.

Take care!
