will surgical operation for the splenic cyst be risky?

User Profile
Hello, my mother, age of 62, has a 8 cm diameter splenic cyst. She had 8 surgeries from other illnesses when she was young and the doctors say that having a surgical operation for the splenic cyst will be very risky. She had tuberculous peritonitis and hepatitis before and has inflammation inside her abdominal still. Also she is a fmf (familiar mediterranean fever) patient. What will be your advise?

Spleen Answer A41176
Hi,
Welcome to the ehealthforum and I am really glad to help you out. The advice which has been given to you by other doctors is absolutely right. Spleen is a very vascular organ and any intervention on the spleen can be really risky and life threatening. There’s always a risk of significant blood loss while operating on the spleen. Hence, my suggestion will also be the same. Leave the splenic cyst untouched. . I sincerely hope that helps. Take care.

Hello and thank you for your kind reply. Referring to your and the other doctor's advise, what may be the risks of untouching the cyst? How much more do you think it can get bigger? Untouching it means leave it until it explodes?

Thank you.
