Dear Dr,

My wife is having a sever hair loss to the extent that she feels it could go off in few weeks time. She is afraid to even comb the hair or to take a shower. She is 30 years old. The hair loss is observed from last couple of months and She had some medical condition from early this year as detailed below.

- she was taking calcort early this year, around April time for a month
- later she was diagnosed with TB and is on TB medication from July
- she took lot of paracetomol in between for variety of reasons

Before all this she did not had any hair loss.

Just few weeks back we consulted a dermatologist and she suggested forcapil for 3 months. She is on forcapil for bout 3 weeks and so far the hair fall has not reduced.

Now several questions

- why such an amount of hair loss
- does forcapil really help, when it will show its effect
- is this something reversible?, of course she cannot stop TB medication.

She is depressed and your answers and opinion is valuable.

Thanks

Hello,

Welcome to ehealthforum and thanks for writing

There are various reasons for hair loss. Common causes of hair loss in females are -iron deficiency, hormonal imbalance, thyroid problem, stress, lack of sleep, familial, or use of chemical on scalp, diseases etc. In your wife's case drugs as Calcort and antitubercular medications seem to be the cause for such hair loss.

The medication Forcapil which has been prescribed is a multivitamin and would help in hair loss but would not show results drastically. Ask her to improve diet with green leafy veg, fresh fruits, plenty of water, sprouts, pulses, high protein diet, avoid items with high sugar content like sweets & chocolates, less of Chinese foods, less of pizza & burgers, more of milk, dry fruits. Good sleep also has a important role to play.

You can go for some simple tests as hair pull test and trichogram to diagnose which type of hair loss is there. There are many medications to improve hair loss like finasteride, dutasteride and topically applied minoxidil but these are available only under prescription and after ruling out other causes of hair loss.

Give your diet an overhaul if you're lacking vital nutrients for growth and switch to foods for healthy hair like food rich in protein, vitamins(mainly vit A and vit C) and other micronutrient like zinc, iron and copper.

Take care!
