when would my doctor want to use a feeding tube?

i have a question about feeding tubes. I am 32, 4\'8 and a half, and weigh 116 pounds, ive had an eating disorder not otherwise specified ( restrict) for 1 and a half yrs. ive lost over 30 pounds restricting my food intake. I have been in hospital for dehydration one month ago cuz of me eating disorder. my dr said my metabolic status is unstable. what does that mean? and when would my doctor want to use a feeding tube?
