What is this strange buzzing sensation in my head and ears?

This is kind of hard to describe. It happens only when I am lying down, usually on my stomach (such as to go to sleep) but not only as I'm falling asleep. It starts as this odd sensation somewhere in my head, and then I kind of feel it radiate out towards my ears. When it reaches my ears, I hear a sort of weird buzzing and get a strange tingle, It's almost like feeling drunk for a moment. Then it passes. It usually comes in groups of 3-4 and then won't happen again for quite a while. The "buzzing" I hear, if I had to best describe the sound, It sounds like someone is running one of those little battery operated fans right behind my ear. I know thats strange but that's the image it creates in my head. Does anyone know what this could be?
