I am 29 weeks and 1 day pregnant and last night I was sitting on the couch and all of a sudden, my stomach got real hard on the right side and it kind of hurt. Was that a contraction or what?

Welcome to ehealthforum.
The tightness only on one side could be due to sudden movement of the baby or its head and causing impact on uterus wall and contraction of the uterine muscles in that place.
If it continues to happen often, then get an evaluation done by your gynecologist. If the reaction of uterus becomes more, there are chances that you might go in for premature labour.
Take care.
