was late, intense mood swings, overwhelmed and irritable

User Profile
So my period was a month late and I was thinking maybe I was pregnant, but I finally got it a couple days ago. I'm now having intense mood swings where I'll suddenly get overwhelmed and irritable and start snapping at everyone. Has this ever happened to anyone? My periods are usually irregular even tho I'm 20 years old and my boyfriend of 3 years and I don't plan to get pregnant until we're both out of college, married and have careers set. We use condoms and I'm not on any other type of birth control. These intense mood swings have never happened to me so I'm thinking maybe it's the sudden flood of hormones. Please let me know if this has either happened to you or if you know any info on the subject. Any input is appreciated! Thanks!!

Welcome to ehealthforum,
It is difficult to comment on the exact cause for the symptoms and the intense mood swings that you describe without examining you and going ahead with further evaluation. If you suspect chances of pregnancy, consider visiting your doctor/gynecologist at the earliest for thorough examination (to confirm pregnancy related changes/signs in body) and blood/serum HCG level test (to confirm/rule out pregnancy accurately). If pregnancy gets ruled out, go ahead with getting further evaluation to look for the underlying cause for the symptoms that you describe. Treatment as appropriate (based on evaluation results) would be started to help you control the symptoms. Be in regular monitoring and follow-up with your treating doctor/gynecologist and report any new/abnormal symptoms immediately.
Take care.
