Welcome to e health forum.

Since you have irregular menstrual cycles, your doctor has prescribed appropriate medications to make your cycles regular.

Most women, usually have a regular menstrual cycle of 28 -34 days.

The most common causes of irregular cycles are Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and Dysfunctional uterine bleeding. The underlying cause is abnormal hormone secretion by the ovaries or the pituitary gland. This results in anovulatory cycles where there is no ovulation and hence this may result in lack of conception and pregnancy.

PCOD ( polycystic ovarian disease) is one of the commonest causes of infertility. Patients have multiple small cysts in their ovaries that occur when the regular changes of a normal menstrual cycle are disrupted. The ovary is enlarged; and it produces persistently elevated amounts of androgen and estrogenic hormones , which set up a vicious cycle. This excess, along with the absence of ovulation, may cause infertility.

The medications prescribed by your doctor include estrogen and progesterone hormones which taken in a cyclical manner help to regularize the pattern and duration of menstrual cycles. Once this is achieved proper ovulation can be achieved and hence it may help in conception and a successful pregnancy.
