My partner and I have been trying to conceive for around 3 months; my period was due on the 1st of January, but I have not yet come on, a couple days ago I had period like cramps for around half an hour, but never came on. I took a pregnancy test last night, then again first this morning, but both were negative. Could I still be pregnant and what are chances I am?

Hi, and thanks for your medical question on eHealth forum!

Sometimes under stress the periods can delay by 7-10 days. So wait out that period, and repeat the urine pregnancy test. If urine pregnancy test is negative then go for a blood pregnancy test. A blood HCG estimation test would be most reliable. If the test is negative then you are not pregnant. If it is borderline, repeat after a week to see if the levels are rising. Rising levels indicate pregnancy.

If this too is negative then other causes of delayed or missed periods will have to be looked at such as ectopics (can give negative urine/HCG tests), stress whether emotional or physical, hypothyroidism, polycystic disease of the ovary, pituitary tumors secreting prolactin, anemia and poor diet, hormonal imbalance, unexplained or sudden weight gain or weight loss. You will need to consult a gynecologist for this. Hope this helps. Take care!
