I had the experience of a foul smell in my nose after a terrible cold.It was like a "nose fart". The smell would just gush out and it smelled like feces. I think this condition can be caused by some kind of misfire in the sinus area. The ENT didn't find an infection and didn't really know what was going on. But he prescribed Nasonex (2 squirts per nostril, per day) and OTC Saline(no limit). I would squirt in a good bit of saline in my nostril, and sniff it in really deeply, with my head thrown back. Then I'd squirt the Nasonex as prescribed. I did this in both nostrils. It was uncomfortable but it worked. The smell went away after about a week of using this regimen. I hope this helps someone. God bless and good luck to everyone.

I just starting having this problem after getting a sinus infection for the 4th time this winter I have pollups which make me prone. I was interested in your posting because I have forced myself to use the Patanse and Nasonex for about the last 6 weeks and I was wondering if there was any relationship. I never used these regularly like this before. I'm not thrilled with taking any meds. if I can help it.
Do you think there is any connection. Has the smell thing completely gone away.
Thanks

I seem to be having the same problem as most of you. I woke up one morning with a sinus infection, which i am quite used to, i have had sinusitus many times over the years, but never have i had the smell i do at the moment. It is a disgusting rotten smell and i am starting to worry if other people can smell it. It all started with a sore throat and cold which after a doctors visit, ended up with antibiotics( amoxycillin) for a chest infection. The day after i finished the antibiotics i woke up with a sinus infection, Another doctors visit and stronger antibiotics. I finished the antibiotics 2 days ago and it now feels like i'm getting the infection back. The rotten smell has been there the whole time, and it is definitely coming out of my nostrils, because my mucous stinks!! I have been using a sinus rinse in between as well to no avail. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated. I have had many sinus problems over the years but never with this smell. It is atrocious!!!!

Well I never! After reading this thread I have discovered I have a tonsillar crypt! I thought I'd give them a prod with the handle of my toothbrush after reading 2 of the above posts as I've had the same awful taste/ smell in my throat/nose for a few months now and out came a foul tasting milky fluid!!! GROSS! So I have got out what I can without throwing up and had a good gargle with mouth wash, if it comes back at least I know how to get rid of it! Thanks guys.

Re: Septum Perforation
Six months ago I went to an ENT (kindly paid for by my friend) who said I had a big hole in my nose. About three months ago and many allergies, I've had a foul smelling nose and mouth. I'm desperate to fix this, it's not only bothersome to me but I don't want to get close to anyone. It's affected my self esteem.

I do not have insurance nor can I spend money on a specialist right now. I will try what others suggested but if anyone else also has a septum perforation with the above problem, please let me know. Thank You.

I've had an on again off again bad taste in my mouth and smell in my nose for about 7 years. Everyone thinks I'm crazy. This is about to sound crazy and dangerous but the ONLY way to make it go away is to either gag or put your head down and push all the blood to your head. It sounds so horrible and it is! But the taste I experience is so horrid I don't even care. The Dr. Said he had no idea what I'm talking about. Ahhh!!! It's really pushing me over the edge. Sometimes I don't get it for an entire day and sometimes I get it every five minutes. Sometimes I don't get it for a week! I got my tonsils removed when I was a child so it's not that. I'm certain it has something to do with my sinus/nasal passages but I have nothing clogged or running or pain. And this has been years!!!!!! It makes me CRAZY! Help!

Not sure if this answer is contained somewhere herein, but i wanted to offer this. About a year ago i developed a bad smell in mr right nostril - very foul. It came and went but was more pronounced if i dipped my head upside down, eg, while tying my shoes. One day my dentist stated i needed a root canal. The root canal specialist confirmed that it was possible the infection inside my upper right molar was actually leaking into my sinus on that side. After the root canal, my symptoms are gone. Check into it. The infection was in my tooth. I had no other symptoms of a tooth problem and only knew i needed a root canal when something showed up on a routine xray.

Getting rid of it once and for all
I was writing a detailed post, hit enter and somehow lost it all. So this one will be more brief. I've had the problem for 3 days, following a cold or flu last week. I read a ton about it and 2 hours after taking action, the smell/taste is already better. Here's what I learned, applied, and will continue to do:

It's either caused by Candida or got worse because of it so no antibiotics because they will only cause temporary relief without getting rid of it and it will return. (Google Candida if you don't know about it--especially you folks who report having this for months or even years; it's Candida-related; I'm 100% certain).

The soreness I felt in my upper left jaw last week was not from a slightly infected tooth pocket(which got better after brushing and swishing with peroxide) but from an infection in the sinus passage beneath the left cheekbone. In my reading, I learned that sinus infections also respond to peroxide. That helped me pinpoint exactly what area to work on.

First, I gently massaged the area in the direction of the normal flow.

Then I found a small squirt bottle and filled it with lightly salted, warm water. I laid with my head hanging over the side of the bed with the infected side more or less down (for gravity)and squirted the salt water in the nostril on the infected side. My focus was to position my head in a way that the salt water could gravitate to the infected passage. Also this position seems to change the pressure in the sinus and many people report relief just from getting up-side-down without the salt water.

I'll use salt water for a couple of days and then add some peroxide to it for a few more. Meanwhile, I will lay off sweets and alcohol and other Candida buddies and hang with some Candida enemies like garlic and vegetables.

The ear canal on the infected side is probably affected too so to be thorough in eliminating infected bacteria from my ENT areas, I will alternate between warm olive oil and peroxide in that ear to help drain out and kill infected matter. Same idea as the sinus but you can lay on your bed. Just let the liquid sit there for a minute or two. I will do this 2 0r 3 times/day for a couple of days. Actually, I'll probably do the other side too, nasal and ear, for good measure.

That plan, along with cleaning up my diet, and I am sure I will not have this problem in a week. I'll try to remember to come back and let you all know how it went but I'm sure anyone who does this--and the diet is key--will get rid of it.

Foul Taste and Odor
An ENT once cultured my drainage but no evidence of infection grew in it. After reading these similar complaints I am all but convinced what we are dealing with is Candida fungus and antibiotics will not cure it, in fact, they actually aggravate the condition. I am researching it a bit as I encourage you to do also.

I have had the rancid peanut butter smell and taste before and used the nasal wash but with pickling salt and baking soda.... 1 quart jar of distilled water, room temp
2-3 teaspoons of pickling salt and 1 round teaspoon of baking soda... shake with lid on till dissolved, pour approx 8 oz into water pick reservoir and spray half in left nostril while leaning over sink, then use remaining in right nostril - do this at least 2 times a day for a week... then take a break and see how your are... as I said I have had this before, but this time I got worried...so many people saying tumors, cancer, etc... and family doctor said he never heard of such, I am not congested.... and I can smell other things... but the taste and smell is back and I brush and floss excessively cause I feel everyone else can smell my breath... it is awful... will post again... after this go around... if this is cleared again...then I will just do it everything as soon as I notice.

I woke up at 5:30 am due to the most disgusting smell- initially I thought something had crawled into my room and died. To me everything reeks on toxic battery acid - including my husband! It's worse on people and meat - I couldn't bring myself to cook. I spoke with my doctor and he said its post-nasal drip that has accumulated in the back of the nose/throat that's started to rot, and the only thing to do is use saline and flush out the nose . I've been doing it every 10 minutes for the past 40, and it's helping a bit. I hope it goes away!

I have horrible allergies and chronic sinus infections. The smell/taste started more friendly, a year ago,but I've experienced it in the past. It is definitely crypt. It has a very distinct odor and there's no missing it. My question is, since adenoids are technically the same tissue as tonsils, can this happen in the adenoids as well. I don't have tonsils anymore but my adenoids are freakishly enlarged from allergies and drainage. If this is possible, what can I do for this? Thanks!
