A little less than a week ago I woke up with a migraine and a REALLY foul taste at the back of my throat and smell in my nose. The migraine went away in a day, but the taste/smell is still there. It smells rather like a rotten potato, and tastes the way I would imagine a rotten potato to taste. A friend said that it might be a cavity, so I have a trip to the dentist planned next week, but I'm wondering if it might be some sort of sinus infection, since I occasionally have to blow my nose and there's a thick milky pale yellowish-green fluid coming out. Every time I blow my nose, it smells like someone is shoving a rotten potato into my face, so I can't tell if the smell is coming from the fluid I blew out or not. I've been brushing like crazy and rinsing with Listerine, but that doesn't make the taste go away completely, and it keeps coming back.

Can anyone help? I'm almost scared to go to the dentist only to find that he can't fix it.

Foul smell & taste
I have this every time I have the flu or a terrible cold. Nobody knows what I am talking about...
As you described, its a foul taste in the mouth and smell of a foul odor. This is the third time I have experienced this--I think it goes away after a week or two...it sucks.. but on the bright side, iced cream tastes & smells good. Smile

bad tast and smeel in mouth and nose
I have experianced this for about 2 years and finally got a referal to an ear nose and throat sugen. I had cat scan of my face done and they said that I have sist under my left eye in the sinus passage that is always draining into my throat. Its not fatal but sure is bothersome. remedy to help flushing the nose with sea salt water, over the counter drugs to help dry up the sinus. The only kind of prsription that has ever worked to cure it for more then one month is the antibiotec (Augmenton) Im not sure how to properly sell the name. And to me its smells like burnt penut butter. Really gros I know I hope this hels you folks out there. Sorry about the spelling and grammer errors writting is not my strongest side of me.

wow you hit it right on the nose...the burnt or rancid Peanut butter is exactly what I was looking for... I have my mixture of pickling salt and baking soda mixed and about to use the water pic to start the clean out... so glad you went to the ENT Doc...and this is the answer - I had a family doctor saying I might have a tumor... cat scan showed nothing but swelling.... so I will irrigate and see if it works... I have read pages and pages, yours hit the exact odor... and it is nasty... thanks.

Bad taste and smell in mouth and nose
I have a constant odour in my right-hand sinus with associated bad taste; my normal smell and taste of food etc is not effected.
It is a bitter taste/smell not very pleasant, although I am getting used to it, but some days it seems worse than others.
It started over 18 months ago and my GP prescribed various antibiotics and nasal sprays all to no effect. I was then sent to the hospital and the consultant tried more powerful antibiotics, still with no positive results so I then had a CT scan, which showed an infection deep in the sinus near to the nerve from the eye.
Therefore surgery took place to open up the airways by removing some bone and they scraped away as much of the infection as possible, the idea being that the extra passage of air would heal the remaining infection.
Eight months later there has been no real improvement, I still have this odour and horrible taste, if I only breathe through the LH side there is no smell, so it definitely comes from the right sinus.
At my last visit to the hospital in February I was told that there was no more help that they could offer and that I would just have to live with it, which is a bit depressing.
Can anyone suggest any help for this condition?
I do take Simvastatin and Micardis Plus daily, but as far as I'm aware they are not the cause.

I also have similar experience, from the sickness and advice from the hospitol to live with this sickness.I understand it is very depressing.(fungal is your main problem)
But you must try this oreganol oil,and apple cider vinegar and fluconazole sikngle dose.
Dosage:Take fluconazole 150mg 2 tablets at once as single dose.Next day start with :-
2-3 drops wild oreganol oil under the tongue 4 time a day.( If very hash dilute with olive oil 1/2 the amount to dilute.). Drink apple cider vinegar 4 tsp 4 times a day.( or put 4-5 drops of oreganol oil a small amount bof glass of water)
you make your own nasal spray with little oreganol oil and sesame oil. Mix and put in any spray bottle and use evry 2 drops every 2-3 hours .it should be hot to kill that fungal infection.Good luck
( This is an advice and you must not follow it, if you don't want to.just sharing my own experience and relief.
I am not responsible action carry by you.)

Rotten smell in nose and mucous following a sinus infection
I am certain aftr reading about a dozen blogs on a foul rotten smell in the nose and mucous from the nose accompanied by on and off sinus pain and I am certain it is causeded by a sinus infection. It occurred right after a head cold (which may have just been a sinus infection. I still have it but but I am going to follow the advice and flush my nose with salt water using a nasal spray and if it doesn't go away get antibiotics from a doc. It really does sounds like a sinus infection.

Tonsillar crypts. Naturally occuring holes in the tonsils that trap food and hold shedding mucous membrane cells along with saliva. Try holding a flash light on your tonsils and gently prodding with something smooth (like the end of a long eyeshadow brush). You might get a white, grainy, sticky, very yucky smelling substance. I cant get a doctor to help me stop this. So, I continue to gag myself with an eyeshadow brush while "expressing my crypts." Good luck with a resolution.

This is exactly what I have been experiencing, I get a flashlight and O-tip to remove the foul smelling grainy yellow green stuff and the smell and taste goes away. I have 2 pockets one on each side that at times fills up and rots. I know it sounds gross but it's reality and the only way to get rid of it is to clean it out. It works until the next time.

I had my tonsils removed because of tonsular crypts, yet the taste/smell has returned. the taste/smell is exactly the same as the smell as the tonsil stones.Sometimes when I inhale i can smell this taste.

Foul odor in sinuses after infection
Oh this was very informative and so very disturbing. I have just had my first experience with this same foul odor when I blow my nose hard after having a tooth flare up and infect my ear, jaw, sinuses, and head. Happy to say after a trip to dentist today and a root canal later my tooth, jaw, ear, and head don''t hurt anymore,,,, but odor remains. It does exist and it is indescribably vile. I an going to run a course of Amoxicillan (Augmentin is good too, might try it or Kopflex because it works on new problems that have adapted to old antibiotics)and always have a cup of green tea with it to intensify it. But next I am going to get a Colloidal Silver nasal spray and advance to that. I will post those results too. Gosh I don''t want to really deal with this more than once aye.

I tried this...hyd peroxide 3% up nose with nasal spray six weeks (dilute 50% water)....then saline solution (like stuff you buy for contact lenses) six weeks nasal spray up nose....daily oil pulling with cold pressed Olive Oil....then six weeks nasal spray with white vinegar 50% water up nose)....sleeping on 3 pillows so no acid reflux in night to go up sinus area....results good but not brilliant...then continuing on with all of above...plus 3% hyd peroxide small cap twice a day in each ear...major major improvement by 85% after years of trying to resolve

nasal odor
I have had reoccuring nasal odor for years. an allergist told me to use Afrin twice daily for about 3 days. It stopped. However it always returns several weeks later. I have also put Neosporin on a q tip and applied up the nose . I also was told to use "NEALMED NASAL RINSE" daily an over the counter powder mixed with distilled water and squirted up the nose daily. They all work but nothing is a long term fix.
GOOD LUCK.

I have had a bad smell for about 3 months and a bad taste in my mouth for about 6 weeks. It's a poisonous, sweet, rotten taste/smell if that makes any sense. A sinus cat scan showed that one of my maxillary sinuses was completely full and blocked but 2 ent's have said they aren't sure if that's the cause of the smell and taste. Going in for a brain MRI next week to look for tumors and am completely terried. Any advice?

bad taste and smell in nasal passage
dont waste your time going to a doctor; so glad there are others with this problem, for years whenever I experienced this, no one knows what i am talking about either, nice to know i am not the only one, i too, definitely think it is a sinus infection. I once did go to an ENT, no help, said he never heard of what i was describing.
Has anyone tried a nasal wash? If so, did it help?
