I had laxative addiction for a long time and i got rid of it by applying all known methods in extreme amounts. Taking 5 pills every day is an extreme thing and you must do extreme things to recover it. That's how i did it:

1- Green Plum and Apricot

Green plum and apricot are fruits that normally makes you diarrhea. Now you can use them to get your bowels working again. Eat at least 1 kg from each of them every day. Even you can feed only with these fruits because they are also nutritious.

2- Water

Drink at least 4 litres of hot water every day. It is necessary for bowels working.

3- Hot Chilli Pepper

Eat lots of them(hotter ones). Even if you don't like chilli pepper, try to eat as much as you can. They will set your bowels on fire and get them working. It feels like they are burning, may cause pain but it will worth it.

4- Applying Cold and Hot

Ok that's a little bit weird, i didn't hear it anywhere, as it is not a long term solution and may have side effects but it is the most extreme and effective way to solve this problem. It is a a serious thing that makes you diarrhea and sick, and i thought it may be useful in reverse way and yes, it is.
Find a cold surface, bathroom floor and wall in a cold weather is appropriate. Put your feet(undressed) on the floor, lean against your butt(yes, undressed again) on the wall and stand in that position for a while(depending on how cold is the surface). Your body and bowel area will become colder, your heart will pump extreme blood to that area to heat it to your normal body temperature and your internal organs (including bowels, yes) will start working very fast, because they have to. Don't apply it too long if the surface is too cold, you can get tired and feel yourself week, get a rest and do it again other day. You can take multivitamins to support your organism against that. As i am not a medician, i am not responsible for side effects but i guarantee that it's bloody hell effective!

Ok, now they are working but you must move them so you need to loosen your muscles. Hot is good for it, take a long hot shower, applying hot water to your bowel area. That cold-hot thing may sound weird but it's really how it works.

That's all from me. I fixed my problem, and i hope you will. and sorry for my bad English as it's not my main language

Wow your story has really made me stop and think. I was clinically anorexic up until about six months ago but I'm still battling a whole load of eating disorders/insecurities. At the moment it is binge-eating and I literally cannot stop. That leads to me panicking about putting on weight (I am still putting on weight even though I know it is bad for my body). And so I take two laxatives a night.
I know this sounds like nothing compared with your 20 after eating anything, but I'm scared that it might lead to more. A slippery slope and all that. If you have any advice that would really help! Smile

OMG, that is really scary, now it's two years that my binge eating disorder is back, even if now I control better the emotional eating I do take one pill (sometimes 2) of laxative almost every week, to keep the weight from escalating, I know it's really bad for me, but I don't know what else to do, I relaxed a lot about my weight and appearance, but I don't want to grow really big, and unfortunately in my life there is still too much stress for me to manage my weight properly, and when I am tired or really stressed I eat....

Hi, I just tried laxatives this year because I haven't been eating the correct diet like I should and it caused constipation. I take about the normal dosage of 2 -3 capsules about 3 times a week. I know I need to stop and reading this forum makes me want to even more.
How do I stop before I do damage?
And have I already done some serious damage ?

I'm not sure if anyone still checks this but I have an audition to doculax for about 6 months now. It started after I got gastric sleeve surgery and was constipated for 2 weeks. Nothing worked but this. I'm afraid of gaining even an ounce. I have several auto immune diseases and I believe that this medication is interacting with my prescribed meds. I'm seeing my doctor soon, in going to talk to her but I can only take a pill form laxative. Someone just told me about Cascara sulfate. It's safe and effective. I'm trying to find it, amazon has it. I'm hoping it works. Just thought I'd share... it's a scary. I'm very upset with myself, I wish I could tell myself to stop but I have an addicting personality so I'm having real tough time. Hope your all ok

Hi. Wow. You had bulimia... For.... 20 years? I have had it for one year and it feels like forever. I dont ever take laxitives because I know that all they do is pass the water or something.. Not the food. But anyway. Thankyou for offering your help to people. What are some things I could do that would help me get out of binge / purge? Its basically cause I dont eat enough during the day... So I get home from school starving.... Then eat eat eat. But its also about the feelings... If I have a !**@! day im like !**@! it im going home and having chocolate. Im almost 16 years old. What are some stratergies that could help me in recovery? I binge purge everyday once, on a rare occation I can manage the day with none. This is what I call a zero day. I had one yesterday. Yay Smile

My daughter has been taking approx. 56-60 Dulcolax a day for the last 5 years. She is 26y.o. and weighs 70lb.
She is a walking skeleton, that is when she can walk. She usually is too weak and dizzy to do much. Stomach pains are horrific as well as un-induced vomiting. She is now in chronic kidney failure. Her electrolytes are abnormal most of the time. Now her iron levels are low.
She does not want help. I fear for her life. What to do

I recently finally stopped my addiction of five very long, intense and tiresome years to laxatives and hopefully my advice can help someone somewhere who feels as desperate as I did before I was able to quit. I read some stories that finally scared me enough to decide I needed to make a change so one day I thought (after being so sick of it all), what the heck and and bought some super high fiber muesli cereal so I went and scoured the store and found a pretty good one called Seven Sundays (not cheap but pretty high in fiber) and paired it with some almond milk then I added a tablespoon of Chia Seeds and Flax seeds (they even sell this stuff at Safeway now so you can find these seeds practically everywhere). I also put in a little extra fiber from a brand called Heather's Tummy Fiber (all of this can be found on Amazon) for good measure but most fiber powders should be fine though just eating the cereal should suffice enough. I made sure to drink lots of water and peppermint tea for the rest of the day plus snacked on apples and bananas. I'm allergic to all kinds of nuts so make sure to read the ingredients before purchasing any cereal, luckily for me I've been able to eat this kind but there are plenty of other muesli cereal brands out there that are also very high in fiber. I ate regular meals for dinner like soup and salad with NO cheese or milk products for a whole week to start and also ate dried prunes as a snack. This diet helped me immensely and I was able to feel regular within two to three days but I had to be strict about it and not give up even if I felt bloated.

Using laxatives everyday was no fun, always having to go once it started at the most inconvenient times, knowing I was abusing my body but wouldn't stop anyway, people worrying about me, wondering if I'll ever be able to go again on my own or ever be able to stop was one of the biggest struggles I've ever had to face besides alcholism. I also used to drink until I vomited and blacked out (I used to drink on a mostly empty stomach to stay thin) and it took years to realize none of that junk in my system was ever going to keep me thin. All that ever did for me was get rid of water weight and only temporarily at that. Instant gratification is tough to overcome but good long term health and mental well being are far more important than feeling temporarily thin. I've been laxative free for several months now and have no desire to ever return to that way of living ever again. My advice won't help everyone because we're all different. Just remember, you're muscles that are used to working and expelling on their own have been atrophied so they need to get used to working on their own again. The body needs a little time and effort for it to realize what's going on and get used to functioning properly. The body is miraculous in trying to recover itself. I wish everyone who is struggling the very best.
