I used to take 100mg of doxycycline a day for acne, ($40 bottle of 30) and now I am supposed to lower the dosage so my doctor prescribed me 20mg of periostat, which is a derative of doxycycline. ($80 bottle of 30)

i don't understand why the bigger dosage is less money, and why I had this switch. I could have just broken the pills in half...Any ideas?

Thank you for asking at Ehealth forum!

I read your question and I understand your concern.
Derivative of doxycycline has more efficiency and potency than parent drug thats why its expensive and dose is low.
I hope it helps. Stay in touch with your healthcare provider for further guidance as our answers are just for education and counselling purposes and cannot be an alternative to actual visit to a doctor.
