Hello, I have had the following symptoms over the past 2 weeks and was wondering if they possibly indicate mono infection:

stomach problems: aches, gas, bloating, indigestion
headache
weakness
mild fever
fatigue
sore throat
stiff neck

in particular, I am suffering symptoms of malabsorption of food. I have an urge to defecate more frequenty than normal (several times a day), and my stools are large, soft, irregularly shaped and contain undigested fragements of food. Also, the color of my stools varies from yellow, green, and brown. I did some research and i'm fairly certain that this is not diarrhea, but rather steatorrhea, which is indicative of problems with my liver or pancreas. I'm certain my gastrointestinal problem is not diarrhea because it is not watery. However, I don't see any signs of jaundice or yellowing of my skin or eyes..

Has anyone ever heard of such symptoms of malabsorption being caused by mono? Or is this more indicative of hepatitis b or c ?

I have a really weird rash all over my body. I took a blood test last week and it came back positive for mono but I think this rash isnt normal, has anyone else had one and if so do you recommend anything for it?

The gi symptoms aren't typically mono symptoms - however I have found some studies that indicate gi tract problems resulting from mono. I have had gi problems and mono now for a few months, but I definitely got checked for other things that might be causing gi problems and all they found was mono. But definitely talk to your doctor. And let us know how it turns out.

Well I turns out I don't have mono but rather hepatitis b virus. I got my blood test results back and they indicate positive for hepatitis b virus surface antigen. I think the gastro problems were the indicator that it is not mono but something else. My doc says my glands were not swollen enough to indicate mono. I don't have fever anymore, only the stomach problems and slight weakness / sick feeling.

Its really great to read these posts. I have had the strangest experience over the last month. It is loonngg and has so many dimensions and I'm still struggling to fathom what's going on because I do not have the "normal" symptoms. It started about a month ago when I woke up feeling like my right side of ribs were bruised, and my left side was soon to follow. I had weird "kidney" pain for about 4 days which were horrible. Anything I ate or drank made me hurt so bad and made me sick. I saw a GI doctor that said that if I got better that it was nothing to worry about after getting a CBC and an mri of the abdomin and pelvis (because i had some swollen nodes in my groin) which were all normal. Just take dexilant (for acid reflux which he thinks is the problem) and a probiotic and you "will be fine". well, a week after that I went to the ER from horrible pressure in my head and still feelings of indigestion were present. They ran another CBC and an ultrasound which were fine, again. I followed up with a doctor at my university health center and she sat and took a note of the LONG list of symptoms I have been having. after an hour she told me that I might be depressed and that "it happens al the time" and reffered me to a psychologist. So I convinced myself that it really might get better if I stopped thinking about it. Well, a few days later, I felt the general indigestion and side pains, but then my left armpit started to ache. The right armpit started the day after. I did not feel like I was getting the flu or anything. So just out of curiosity I looked up my symptoms online and they pointed to some pretty horrid stuff (lymphoma). I thought it be best to see another doctor and get myself checked out. I started getting more and more fatigued and missed days of school. I was getting depressed and I felt alone because no one was able to let me know what was going on. I went to the doctor and she thought it might be mono, but the test came back negative for a current infection but showed that I was infected with EBV in the past. So I saw her agai and she started to worry and told me that I needed to see an infectious disease specialist and get a biopsy of the lymph nodes under my arms or my groin. Very shortly after that, I started getting weaker and more fatigued and the starnger symptoms started to arise. I started getting shooting pain in my arms and legs. That progressed and changed into a feeling of very heavy arms and legs (almost couldnt lift my arms) and was tired all the time. Still, I made myself go to class and then had to go to the ER again when the shortness/difficulty breathing got really bad and the heaviness in my arms got scary. I called a family friend who happened to be an oncologist and I explained what had been going on. He seemed concerned and told me to come see him. After another round of blood tests (including another mono and thyroid exam because of some hair loss over the last few months) came back normal, they too were worried because of my swollen armpit lymph nodes. They told me to follow up with an oncologist. I went and saw the oncologist and he was surprised to find NO obvious swelling of lymph nodes. He tried to look for the ones that these doctors and I have talking about and said that there was nothing that was there. He told me that the general surgeon was probably not going to do the biopsy because there was nothing obvious to biopsy. He said it was probably viral and that I needed to sleep it off. After seeing the surgeon today, he told me the same thing. Which in a way is relieving but im still scared. I'm trying to tell myself its viral and that not all people have the same symptoms. I do not have a fever, and no real bad sore throat. I have really bad back pain and chills. I get better and worse and some days I feel like I might be completely ok. I have had a horrible experience last night with rapid heart beat with bad chest pain (almost like its going to crack) and severe pain in my arms legs and head and had violent chills. I felt like I was going crazy, literally. I have been having trouble going to sleep some nights but feel weak and exhausted and have to take naps. I have had weight loss without trying and my bowel movements have been loose, stiff neck, sore hips and all over aches. I have been reading that a lot of people can get mono twice (i'm 21) and that the can test negative but really have mono. I have been finding some comfort reading these posts. I'm praying that it is nothing serious even though I will still continue to follow up with some doctors. It's so scary not knowing whats going on and being dimissed by some doctors when you KNOW that something is not right. It's been tough but from what I see, viral infections like mono can cause some weird disjointed and strange symptoms. I hope everyone here is better and in good health!
