Hi daniellea,

it is quite normal to have spotting during the first trimester, as long as it doesn't get any heavier than just spotting. If you are bleeding as heavily as a period along with abdominal cramping and lower back pain then you need to see your doctor or go to the hospital. Sometimes spotting in the first trimester can be caused by an inflamed cervix, or even something as simple as a bump to the cervix during sexual intercourse. I am pregnant for the 3rd time and I had spotting in the first trimester. I am now 3 months pregnant and haven't had spotting since, everything is going fine. I did how ever, have a miscarriage in may and it started off as spotting, but it quickly became very heavy bleeding containing clots, and this whole process happened over a period of about 2 days. It got heavy very quickly.

Good luck,

suzy
