Chronic Epididymitis (Page 13)

March 7th, 2011
ouchcouch,

I hardly had alcohol from the day I first got these pains.
However I started taking coffee recently after checking with my urologist. May be he thinks it is more an Epididymitis rather than Prostatitis. I don't take much spicy food.

angelal9,

I've tried all your suggestions. Most of those worked for me, especially drinking lot of water and elevated sleeping on back. Interestingly pain killers never worked for me.

One day I tried sleeping on my stomach, the very next day the pain returned severely.

I'm suffering from this pain for the last 8 months. I did experimenting taking couple of beers 2 months back to see whether it aggravates the pain. Yes, I had a severe pain on that night.

As ouchcouch was saying, I might have had Epididymitis initially which turned into Prostatitis?

Can you also tell what is your healing time, and for how long you had these pains? These 8 months almost ruined me.

Hi Pete,

It took me 2 months once I followed my own cures.

In total I had the problem for 6 months starting with anti biotics.

I had had the illness about 6 years previously which had been cured by anti biotics on that occassion.

I slept on the bed rest and pillows for approx 6 weeks, my wife was understanding.

The zinc was the item that seemed to complete the cure as I moved from minimum pain to no pain.

Good morning everyone, have any of you found any additional remedies cures for this problem. I still have the pain, discomfort and tenderness in the scrotum coming from the inside (the epididymus glands on the right side). I have been praying a lot, doing stretching for that area, using a pillow to sleep, taking hot/cold sitz in the shower, taking a Prostate Complex formula that includes saw palmetto pygeum etc, also taking Grapefruit seed extract, applying MSM cream in that area. The tenderness and pain still does not go away and it affects my life a lot. Have any of you found any additional things/medicines/supplements/methods that have helped? Please let us know. I know a lot of you are giving very valuable suggestions we really appreciated because the best gift that we all have is our good health.

hi magic7508.

over the past several months i've tried everything from 40 days of strong antibiotics to supplements and now, physical therapy. i've set up sessions with Amy Stein who wrote the book Heal Pelvic Pain, which is definitely worth reading. it has helped me a lot already.

before you start treating yours, have you figured out the cause yet? demand a complete blood count, full urinalysis and semenalysis with bacterial culture. if you're up for it, i'd recommend getting a prostate exam from a good urologist and have a culture of your prostatic fluid as well. that's the only way to be sure if it is bacterial or not. it would be most likely show up in the semen or prostate fluid if it was. I have had normal white blood cells and no evidence of infection thus far.

if not, i'd highly recommend examining it and treating it as a pelvic floor muscle tension disorder. it can't hurt to try if you've tried everything else. until i started understanding the pelvic floor muscles i never even realized how much clenching and damage i do all day long. for me it started with epididymitis, then prostatitis, and now i've got a spermatocele and varicocele as well as severe infertility. all this while i'm trying to get my wife pregnant. this all manifested from stress and muscle tension that i wasn't even aware i was doing.

Here's what has helped me tremendously:

- Relax. It becomes almost impossible because of the mental toll this takes on you but it must be done, or the symptoms can quickly spiral out of control like mine have.

- Warm baths. I was taking them nightly but have had to take a break because they could be contributing to my sperm issues. Warm baths rock. I made a ritual out of it, like a chick. Put on some relaxing music, candle, the works. Ha with no shame. Every single night right before bed. Then dry up quickly and sleep in boxers. Keep cool while you sleep.

- Support the immune system. When your testicles are under trauma they can produce less testosterone, which can weaken your immune system.

- Supplements. I'm still doing trial and error here but this is my daily routine right now...

Garlic: This is the most important to me. Get one with high Allicin content, not the aged stuff. Alli-C is my favorite, but Solaray Garlicare is available in normal vitamin stores. I just take a higher dosage. It's good for a lot of stuff but for me this is for antibiotic purposes. Yeah, I know I said I don't have an infection but I'm learning that even "non-bacterial" prostatitis or epididymitis can be due to a bacteria of some kind. Garlic is the most wide-spectrum natural antibiotic known to man. It works. I was skeptical but it's kept things at bay better than a month of Doxycycline. Unlike pharmas, garlic can penetrate all organs and is not subject to resistance from any bacteria, and doesn't damage good bacteria in the gut. Pretty awesome stuff. If you don't want to buy pills you can eat 4-6 raw cloves spread out through the day. I chop it up fine and just chug it down with a big glass of water. Your breath will stink.

Vitamin C with Quercitin: This stuff rocks. I don't know why. I heard about it from another prostate/epi site and gave it a shot.

Selenium: Excellent antioxidant and immune booter

Cranberry Extract: To keep the UT clean.

Omega-3 Fish Oil: Great for inflammation, nerves and immune system

Probiotics: Essential for keeping the gut healthy and nasty bacteria at bay. I also do a big yogurt smoothie with breakfast every day. Also needed after long bouts of prescription antibiotics.

Chelated Calcium: Helps counteract Zinc. You might read that Zinc is essential, but it is actually a pro-inflammatory. I get the daily dosage of 15mg of zinc from a multivitamin and that's it. I don't take Zinc supplements. I also avoid B complexes and too much potassium for the same reason.

Prostate Mix: Similar to yours. Saw Palmetto, Pumpkin seed, etc. I take two every 4 hours.

Milk Thistle Extract: Helps my liver deal with all this extra crap and boosts immunity as well.

"The Broccoli Treatment": Google it. Worked for me. Makes you wanna barf after a while. : )

No caffeine, no alcohol, no smoking. No acidic foods. Stay regular (don't get constipated). From what I've experienced and been told by doctors, avoiding ejaculation is only useful if you have a genuine bacterial infection, to avoid spreading around your urinary tract. Otherwise, your pain could be originating from prostate swelling or pelvic inflammation, in which case "keeping the pipes clean" is highly beneficial. Once we determined it was all coming from my prostate my doctor advised me to be having at least 1 ejaculation per day, 2 or 3 if I could.

Beyond all that, keep moving. It hurts like hell, but keep active. Don't go nuts (no pun intended), but don't just rot on the couch. That makes it worse. Meditate. Look for some guided healing meditations on iTunes podcasts. Your mind plays as much a role as the pills. Stretching, exercise. Keep the blood moving and the congestion to a minimum in the pelvic area and whole body.

I've had some pretty crummy illnesses in my day, but this whole ordeal takes the cake. A lot of it is probably due to where it is in your body, the location of the organs, and the emotions associated with them. If this same pain or infection was in your arm it would be gone in a week. The fact that it is in your manhood adds so much severity and worry to the equation. Relax. Treat it with your instincts and good information. Let yourself get better and you will. Hang in there.

Hi guys,

Hope you guys are feeling and doing good. I'm still working on my recovery. Thanks angelal9 for your help I'm going to get the bed wedge raise delivered today. I wanted to ask any of you. Do you guys get also a pain (like a squeezing pain in one of the buttchics/rear) I have been having this pain in my rear on the right side. When I sit down I feel it more. yesterday I put ice and I could feel the discomfort and the pain. I've been stretching/exercising those muscles for the last 8 months and don't if I pulled a muscle or pinched a nerve. I work at an office so I'm sitting down a lot. Any ideas of what this could be? Can the pain be radiating from somewhere else? My epdidymus still having some pain and discomfort but a little less today. Can the pain be moving from genitals to that area in my rear? any suggestions, treatments?

Can I ask (perhaps a dumb question)?

I've had this for three weeks now. While it is 80% better than what it was the first two days I had it, it still bothers me sometimes. But for those of you who have been suffering longer, why not just get the surgery to have the epidiymis removed?

I was actually hoping someone could reply and tell me if my symptoms match epididymitis. I was diagnosed with it after a trip to the emergency room. When it started I was doing some non-weightbaring squats (ie, not holding any weight) and then I began a walk. As soon as I started walking it felt like i bruised my right testicle. You know how people sometimes wear biker shorts under their regular shorts? I did that and I thought that I had just thwacked/bumped the testicle against the pressure of the biker shorts. I continued walking but the pain didn't abate.

Anyway, 4 hours later I'm at the ER. If a fly would have landed on my testicle I would have screamed. They did an ultrasound and said there was a lot of increased blood flow to my epididymis. I got put on 14 days of Bactrim.

Within 2 days the pain went down 80%. Within three the pain went down 90%. But the remaining pain lingered. Yesterday it was quite bad. But the funny thing about my lingering pain is that my testicle isn't tender to the touch. Matter of fact I can hold it and roll it all around with no pain. Does that sound like epididymitis?

What I'm thinking now is I may have trigger points in my psoas, piriformis, or other gluteal muscles causing the pain in my testicle (the pain switches between a dull ache to a burning sensation). I know trigger points can be set up by a bad infection, which can cause symptoms to linger for much longer after the original infection has healed.

Anyway, I'm just looking for some feedback. Given that I can touch and hold and roll my testicle around without increased pain (matter of fact, it distracts from the pain when I do so), does that sound like epididymitis?

Thanks for any replies.

PS. This started about three weeks ago.

loft,

When I took the ultrasound doppler on my scrotum, it showed very mild swelling on my left epididymis, so the report came with a "mild epididymitis?" with a "?" where the lab technician or the doctor was inclusive to take a decision.

Even I'm able to roll my testicles without any pain. There is no tenderness. This made my urologist think it may not be epididymitis. As the epididymis is attached on top of the testicles, if you touch or roll, you should definitely feel the tenderness.

Unless your ultrasound reveals any swelling and no tenderness while touching the testicles, I should think about any other infections other than epididymitis.

magic7508, OuchCouch,

Guys, have you tried any anti-parasites like Hetrazan? The urologist was saying though it is for filarial epidydmitis, it can be given for treating testicle pains with unexplained reasons.

Hi guys, I have two questions, one related to the physical condition, and the other about something else -

1. My testicle with the chronic condition tends to pull up or contract a bit when it gets tired or uncomfortable, especially after sitting for long. In other words, compared to the other testicle, the chronic one would hang higher and sort of smaller when it feels uncomfortable, but it is not pain, just some sort of soreness. I wonder what is really happening in this kind of situation. I suspect it has to do with blood circulation, but I am not sure if there is other factor I should worry about. My doctor cannot give me an explanation.

2. This is just a social question. Besides the physical and psychological ordeal, I wonder how everyone is coping with the social relationships. I mean how do you communicate with other people about your problems, or do you communicate at all? I guess the answer really depends on who we are dealing with, including immediate family members, other relatives, friends, and colleagues. I feel this is as troublesome as the physical and psychological issue and we should know better what would be the approprate attitude and action.

Thank you for your attention and input!

Has anyone had gel like semen when ejaculating? The gel only lasts a day and it's usually when I haven't had sex for a few days.

A little background.
I've had 20 days of cipro and my symptoms are starting to come back. The gel, little pain in right teste, and a hard time urinating. Also I take saw palmetto and Echinacea which was helping. I've never had any tests yet beside urine sample so far. Felt great during the cipro.

Hi guys, have you had more luck with this? I was feeling okay for about 3 to 4 months taking my natural supplements that included probiotics, saw palmetto, quercertin with bromelin, grapefruit seed extract etc. Like 8 or 10 days ago, I had sex with my girlfriend we did it numerous times that day I felt okay. Then we did it again a few days after (like 3 times) and two days after I started having the discomfort/tenderness in my right epididymis and scrotum coming back. Do you guys think it was the sex? we did several sexual positions the one where she was on top and was moving may have caused some irritation because her butt hitting/squeezing my testicles. Any advice? If one is to have sex what positions should one do? I guess avoid being on the bottom. Any other treatments that have worked for you guys? Should we not have sex at all? the doctors have said in the past to me that it is good to have sex to clean the tubes. Please help me. thanks

Hi,

I am 60 YO and been suffering now for 3 months. I have swelling and tenderness on the left testicle only. I am under VA care and so far have been on Cipro and then Moxifloxin with some reduction in pain. I try to stay very active and this has really put a cramp in my bicycle rides and gardening. I have cut way back on coffee, stopped using all alcohol and stopped with the spicy foods which is the hardest for me as I used hot peppers on all my meals plus I would take a cayenne supplement in the morning with my vitamins. I now wear 2 pairs of good Hane's briefs even to bed for the additional support. I also hot tub once a day and use ice packs twice a day. When this first started the left testicle was tennis ball size while the other was egg sized. It left is now close to duck egg size but still tender.

I met with the VA today and they agreed to start me on a prescription of Flomax one a day and if no improvement after 7 days I am supposed to go to 2 a day.

epididymitis
there is a patch called SALONPAS, it is only around $5 and it is being sold at walgreen, walmart, cvs etc
It is the green small package, there are 2-3 kind of it, so make sure to get the small green one, it does not burn it much when you oput it on first. since it has menthol, it causes a little burning first but you get used to it.
if you put it around testicles, it numbs the pain for at least 5-8 hours. The patch do not mention that it can be used around genitals but it helps! Just an advice, I am not sure what the long term effect of this patch.

Since my last post about a month ago I got my VA Dr. to prescribe Tamsulosin (Brand name: Flomax), I had suspected I was experiencing urine reflex as I would have to urinate terrible bad in the morning and it would take 3 trips to the bathroom to completely empty my bladder. I started taking it about 3 weeks ago. Dr. told me it may take some time. Well 1 week went by and nothing, same thing the second week. Then about 5 days ago I awoke with no pain just some tenderness and that even seems to be abating. I am still watching and restricting my intake of coffee & spicy foods and currently restrict my fluid intake after 9:00 pm. What a wonderful joy to be without the pain. I am much more active now and have a much better outlook on life.

One minor downside is I have to take this in the evening as they really make me sleepy. Even with taking at nite I still catch myself nodding off during the day. But it is well worth it.

Your epididymitis also stopped hurting? Is without any pain?

Thanks for the help friend.

Here in Brazil, many men are with this problem, and our doctors are also not solving anything. The procedure adopted is equal to their doctors.

I lost the will to seek girls for sex, I feel insecure about it after the problem appeared.

As if taking this flomax? 1 per day? How many days?

Thank you!

These are 0.4mg capsules color is olive green & orange w/ black bands. Dr told me one a day and if no results go to 2 a day but to call him so he could update my file so I wouldn't run out. Prescription was for 90 or 90 day supply. I have not went to 2 a day but it took 2 to 2 1/2 weeks for improvement.

P.S. I just made love to my wife for the first time in 3 months. Will see if the pain returns. I hope not.
