I was told that I have 3 microscopic areas of echogenic bowel at my first ultrasound. Grade 2-2.5. All other findings were completely normal. I was sent to a neonatologist and he reproted the same finding. The baby appears perfectly noraml in regards to growth measurements, heart, open hands/fist visible, spine, skull, etc. I am not a carrier for cf. My afp was 1 in 3400 (negative). The cmv and toxoplasmosis tests were both negative. The next option is an amniocentesis. I would rather avoid this if possible... The online education varies widely from mortality to perfectly normal babies. Has anyone else had a simiiliar experience. I am terribly worried

Dear mastiffmom,

i have been online and I happened across this website and your post. I know exactly how you feel. I am 19 weeks pregnant and they found echogenic bowel since my first sonogram. The stage is also at 2 -2.5. They ran the same tests that they ran on you. However, my doctor wanted the amnio done. I actually had the amnio done this afternoon. And my doctor redid all my bloodwork this afternoon. I had the standard tests as well as the torch test. Since this has been going on I have done a lot of research and found the same information you have. It can range anywhere from a normal finding in the second trimester to the worst situation. I know for me, I was apprehensive about doing the amnio, but after talking with my doctor, he told me that the risks are minimal and at least I know after all the tests are done, things like chromosomal disorders or any of the torch viruses can be ruled out. I know I will be nervous until the baby is born and I am told that he is healthy. I wish the same for you. I can say it helps to know that I am not alone.
Please write back. Take care, best wishes

Reply Echogenic Bowel
I know it is late to post, but if anyone else happens to come accross this. I would like to say I had exactally the same finding in my sons ultrasound and level 2 ultrasound. At the time we opted not to do an amnio. He is perfectly healthy and now 9 years old. I know it is hard not to worry but most likely if you have no other risk factors everything should be fine.

Glad to hear that! Our son and wife have had their second ultrasound showing echocentric bowel quite clearly. They are opting for anmio. And, of course, are frightened. Does anyone know the odds for DS, Cystic Fibrosis and for bowel obstruction when the "white spot" in the bowel is a "perfect O"?
Thanks so much, worried grandmother

Echogenic bowel and I am a carrier for CF....
I just had my level 2 ultrasound done this morning at 16 weeks pregnant. I was informed a couple of weeks ago that I AM a carrier for CF... The specialist did not know this when he told my husband and I that the ultrasound showed echogenic bowel. We are very concerned. My husband is being tested to see if he is a carrier, but it will take a week to get the results. I was wondering if there were any other women out there who were carriers, saw echogenic bowel, and had husbands who were NOT carriers of CF and everything turned out OK for the baby??? Trying to stay hopeful....

Echogenic markers in ultrasound level 2
We just spoke to a perinatologist yesterday. He said that that chances of baby having down syndrome just after echogenic bowl is 1 in 5000 in asians (it depends on race too so plz check your numbers). but we also found out that her kidney sacks are also dialated which is another marker. so we are going for amnio tomorrow. our chances of having a baby with DS are 1 in 400 but every thing else is normal & in range. we are keeping our fingers crossed. here are some sites to get more information if you need it. it explains in details about what are your chances & if to do the amnio or not !!

hope it is helpful. have faith as there is nothing else we can do if GOD FORBID it is there. I'll pray.
