Well what brand of birth control are you on? I am on Yaz and my doctor did tell me that I would urinate alot more often because the synthetic progesterone in Yaz also acts like a water pill. In other words to prevent bloating you will in turn urinate alot more often. I've definately noticed that I have to pee alot more and can't hold it as easily but I don't have times when I feel like I need to pee and dont have to. That does somewhat sound like a UTI. What I would do is just keep an eye on whats happening and maybe a little cranberry juice wouldn't hurt as an experience but I doubt its anything to seriously worry about.

I am in the same situation as you guys. I have been on Marvelon 28 for about two years now, it is a combination pill that has synthetic desogestrel and ethinyl estradiol. Yup I wake up a lot to go pee during the night, except I actually have to pee, it like me body doesn't absorb the liquids I'm drinking. And just like you guys, it comes and goes depending on the time of the month. The week just before my period, its really awful. But it doesn't hurt its just annoying.

Need to urinate more frequently while on the pill???
I was on the pill (logynon) for 15 years & I stopped taking it last year. During the entire time I was on the pill I did feel the urge to urinate more frequently, especially at night time. In the end it affected my sleep patterns to the point that I became an insomniac! I would need to go to the toilet sometimes upto 15 times a night which meant that I had virtually no sleep. At the time i did not realise that the pill was to blame, I had lots of various tests at the hospital to find the cause of the problem but all of the results came back negative. I thought that I was going insane! I kind of learnt to live with this problem and was told that it was all in my head. It's only since I've stopped taking the pill that everything has returned to normal. I have also lost a stone in weight (without even trying)since stopping the pill!!! I realise that the pill is a great invention and while I was taking it my periods were regular and apart from the needing to urinate all of the time I thought that I was happy on it. It's only now that I realise I was not happy, it killed my sex drive and I also had terrible headaches the day before and the first day of my period. Once I have had a baby (if I am lucky enough) I will not go back to the pill so I will have to find an alternative contraception. I hope this information is useful to someone as in the 15 years that I took it I could not find any info regarding my (embarrasing) problem and was told by various GPs that it was most definately not the pill causing the problem!!!!

I'm on Nuvaring and I always have to pee too! I was so afraid I was pregnant or had a UTI, because sometimes I would feel the need to pee but then I would try and nothing happened. Also, I practically had to sprint to a bathroom once the urge came because it became alot harder to hold it in. I'm so glad I found this blog, I thought I was going crazy!

Oh my gosh, i am sssoooo happy i found this!! found all of you! I have been on and off the pill over the past few years, starting with ortho tri cyclen, and i am now on my second month of microgestin after taking about a full year off. I had-have a problem with frequent urination, when i was on the ortho i thought it might be the pill but at the time when i tried looking it up online i found no results, i asked my gynecologist and she told me the pill would not cause this problem, i moved a year later still having the same problem i asked my new gynecologist and she told me the same thing, i do not have and did not have health insurance so when i did go to have tests done to see what was wrong with me it was not cheep, and was quite terrifying, i thought there was really something wrong with me, even when i asked the normal doctor he said "nope not the birth control" and all my tests came back negative, and yet another search online come up with nothing, i felt helpless, lost, frustrated and scared. I stopped taking the ortho, like i said before, close to a year ago after my divorce, it was a hard time so i didn't notice the frequency of my urination had gone down, i was not on the birth control just for contraceptive reasons i also suffer from quite bad pmdd, my periods are simply offal and can leave me bed ridden for over a week, i was on the ortho tri cyclen for so long that it took about a year for my periods to go back to being so bad, at witch time i started my new pill the microgestin, and the nonstop urination started yet again, witch made me try yet again to see if anyone was suffering like i am, to see if it really is the pill, as i have thought for some time now. And now there is no question in my mind that its 100% the pill, and i feel so much better knowing so. Not saying if you have problems urinating to much and you are also on the pill that you should not ask your doctor, you should, but odds are its just the pill. I feel like such a weight has been lifted off my shoulders, thank you all for being so open, and finally putting an end to all the questions in my head. But like most of you i get up 3-4 times a night to pee, and all throughout the day nonstop peeing, even just the smallest bit some times, but because i use the pill to help with my hellish periods i cant stop even though i desperately want to, peeing this much is quite frustrating to say the least, but i am still so happy i finally have my answer!

Doctors should warn patients!
I just went through the worst month of my life hands down. I went on birth control after not being on it for 7-8 years. The first week was fine but then I felt like I was getting a really bad UTI. I went and had my pee tested and there was no bacteria hence no UTI. Meanwhile I was miserable! I would have the constant feeling of pressure on my bladder like I had to pee every 5 minutes! Except when I would go to pee none would come out. I'm an elementary school teacher and I was miserable at work. I had no patience as I was so incredibly uncomfortable. I made myself sick with worry by looking up my symptoms online. Why was worse was all the gynos and eurologists earliest open appts was in a month! I did nt know how i could last that long! I then recalled the only change I had made in my life was going on birth control.....I stopped taking the pills that day....it's now a week later and almost all of my symptoms have cleared up! Why this side effect is not seriously listed as a MAJOR consideration for women who are thinking of taking birth control is terrible. Doctors are more interested in prescribing a pill than taking the time to go over what is BEST for the patient. I'm still keeping next months follow up appt with the gyno( a new one!) But each day I'm off BC I feel better each day!
Hang in there!

Hi all

I got diagnosed with endometriosis some time back and the doctor did a surgery to remove the cyst. She put me on a BCP crisanta and since then I feel like peeing all the time . Some days I get up at least 7 8 times in the night. I can't go off the meds coz they are the one preventing the cyst from returning but this peeing thing is driving me insane. The doctor refuses to believe its a side effect of the pill. I really need some advise as the feeling is killing me. I am frustrated. Please help

OMG. Ever sincec I started Lutera, a month into it, my bladder went crazy. Urgency has been so bad, it's put me on short term disability through work, affected my social life and my boyfriend. It's been HELL!!!

The docs kept saying the pill has nothing to do with it. I was diagnosed with mild IC. I even had ssurgery! I just saw a dr today whole told me to get off the damn pill as it CAN cause our symptoms. Hormones can REALLY screw with you and I'm stopping the pill today and waiting 3-4 months to see if my symptoms go away. If they do, I'm going to be relieved but angry that nobody believed me. So glad I found all these posts.

So glad I found this forum. I too have endured the worst month of my life. Been on ortho tri cyclen for 3 years now. In December I decided to keep taking the pill to skip my period. The day I was supposed to get my period I started experiencing frequent urination and urgency. I can hold it if I need to, but it's very uncomfortable. Have been to several doctors since. Gynecologist said no infection and referred me to urologist. Was tested for everything with urologist. I did skip my period again when I had to go through cystoscopy. He did not find any infection, kidney or bladder stones, cancer or interstitial cystitis. Gynecologist tested for STDs and I don't have that either. Get regular blood tests through another doctor so it's not diabetes. Urologist basically said "I don't know must be overactive bladder." i have been on two different overactive bladder meds with no real benefit. Finally decided myself that the issue had to be related to my birth control pills and stopped taking them on Wednesday. Now I have my period again. Was really hoping that problem would go away on its own, but I'm still experiencing frequent urination and urgency. May be even worse since I stopped the pills. So glad I found this forum which indicates that I may be right that messing with the birth control pills affected my bladder. I am praying that the more time that goes by without the pills in my system that I will get relief and go back to normal. I would pay anything, give anything to go back to the person I was a month ago. Everyday has been agony and I'm fighting to not get depressed and maintain my normal lifestyle. Although I have stopped jogging for fear of an accident and have lost weight because I've lost my appetite due to stress this has caused. PLEASE let me know if any one else has been in this situation before and if they got better when they finally stopped taking the pill. Also please let me know how long it took to get back to normal. I cannot imagine having to live like this for a prolonged period of time. Thanks!!!!

Yaz has ruined my life!
Wow I am so happy I found this forum but so angry I did not find this out before! I have been on birth control since I started becoming sexual active at age 16 and for the last probably 6 years I have been on Nuvaring without problems. I just switched to Yaz in December and about a month after I started having major symptoms of overactive bladder. It started suddenly in the middle of a work shift where I constantly was having the urge to pee. I couldn't stop feeling like I had to pee constantly for several days. I had no idea what was wrong with me and I was extremely embarrassed. I am only 27 years old (just had my birthday too so I thought I was suddenly getting way older in the matter of months) and I was feeling like an old woman because if I was standing, I had to pee. I would have to run to the bathroom probably 15-20 times a night during a 10 hour shift. And I just went to Disneyland with my boyfriend and I was sooooo miserable and irritable because we would be in line for a ride and I would feel like i had to clench the entire time so I didn't pee my pants. It has made me so depressed and cranky all the time because I could not figure out what in the hell was wrong with me. Ohhh and for the past two months I have had major spotting (almost a full period) in the third week of my cycle which has ruined several pairs of underwear....Anyways, I have been treating the overactive bladder symptoms with Oxybutinin at first (caused horrible dry mouth) and just recently switched to Toviaz (a lot better on the dry mouth and dry eyes but I would still rather not be taking it). I also just went to a Urologist who didn't want to really listen to me and just told me I have overactive bladder disorder and there is nothing I can do besides take the Toviaz. Well after a bunch of research today and finding other forums like this (altho this one has been the best with other people describing problems just like mine!), I am going to stop taking the Yaz for a couple months and see if the symptoms go away. I really really hope they go away and I will know it was just the stupid Yaz (also Yasmin I have tried now for the last month with no relief) and not that my body is breaking down on me. I've literally been crying for the past 20 minutes after reading all this stuff because I am so happy to know I am not the only one, and so angry that I got on this stuff and even the Urologist did not connect the dots. The only reason I got off the Nuvaring was because my boyfriend was having an allergic reaction to it, but now I don't give a dang if we ever have sex again, I want my life back!

Nocturia, frequent night time urination, birth control, yaz
I'm relieved that I'm not alone in my nocturia (frequent night time urination). I have been on Yaz for 4 years and all that time I've found myself getting up several times during the night to urinate. This has disrupted my regular sleep pattern and left me exhausted during the day. Last night was probably the worst night yet; I got up over 6 times during the night--and I made sure not to have any fluids 2 hours before bed and still had to pee this much! I am going off this stupid pill for good. I took yaz as a contraceptive method as well as to help with my irregular periods and PMDD but I'm going to try Vitanica fem rebalance and women's phase 1 premenstrual support because I've read good things about them and I'd rather use plants and supplements to treat my hormonal imbalance instead of these manufactured hormones that wreak havoc on the body. For contraception I am going to use the FAM symptothermal method along with a diaghragm/spermacide as backup. No hormones!

Multiple Symptoms- Frequent Urination
I have never posted on a health forum, but since I have been reading them so much I figured I would write my own. I have been on Lomedia 24 fe for 3 months now (5 days from finish of last pack). Not only on this third month have I experienced frequent urination- It has come with almost every side effected listed. Black stools, swollen gums (for about 2 days), nipple discharge, anxiety, not able to sleep through the nightm, darker areoles, nausea, etc. How you you pause to not freak out you're pregnant? But, I take my pill at the exact same time everyday and use back up method. Has anyone else used this birth control and experienced these symptoms? I think clearly, this bc is not right for me.

Hi all,
I have been having so much problem with my bladder over the past 2 years it is making me want to kill myself! It has taken over my life and it is destroying it slowely. PPl that know off the issue keep on saying its not bad and not a terminal illness but when it affects every facet of your life it's hard to listen. Some 10 years ago I was diagnosed with a cyst on my ovary, so was put on Yasmin first and then Cilest to see if it will go away but as it didn't I had surgery. I then stayed on Cilest as my doc told me cysts might come back so since 2006-2013 I was taking Cilest. Then towards the end I had more and more breakthrough bleeds and then I started getting frequent urination and urgency problems. I was first given various antibiotics for suspected UTIs and even vaginal infection for about 3/4 months when the GP/OB and urogyno said it might just be overactive bladder. I got off Cilest, Was first given solifenacin which had no effect on urgency and frequency and then I started having mild mixed incontinence. Not being in a relationship but relatively young this was absolutely horrible. I spent countless nights crying my eyes out, my sleeping got off whack and I became anti social cos i was so tired all the time. Then I got put onto tolteradine, which tho the dry mouth side effects were bad seemed to start working on urgency and frequency and urge incontinence but not on stress incontinence. I was then put on long released tolterodine so that minimised dry mouth but stress incontinence worsened. CT scans and ultrasounds came back ok. I noticed incontinence getting worse right before my period, like 3-4 days before, really the best days were sort of mid to second part of cycle, usually before day 13/14to 20/21 of cycle. So as one does when docs just tell you you need to get used to overactive bladder and incontinence issues cos many other women have it i spent countless hrs reading stuff online. I thought that its definitely affected by the hormones I just didn't know which, estrogen or progesterone...so I thought i'd give a pill a go, I spoke to specialist urogyno and my GP and because i am also little overweight (exercise is very difficult when you are leaking, not impossible just really uncomfortable!!) they put me on 20/150 Gedarel. And oh my god but this has brought back urgency and frequency with a vengeance. I am on my first pack, maybe 8 days in and its sheer hell. I pee on average 4 times a night btu the moment i am done i feel the need to go again and the urge is unbearable. I now need to wait for good ten days before I get a doc appointment as I really don't know what to do now. I looked and saw online that the two pills I was given Cilest and Gedarel are estrogen dominant ones. Maybe it is worth trying taking some that are progestoren dominant, i dunno. Estrogen, they say, is responsible for sort of elasticy and muscle tone in the bladder as well so at first I thought that was the issue why i had stress incontinence, now I am not sure I guess while I haven't enlightened the discussion here with advice, I just wonna tell people that are experiencing things like that they are not alone. If i ever work things out I will post my solution, there are so many women, young and old having so much problem with this and most GPs just brush it off as though its not unusual just annoying!!. If anyone has any suggestions I am all ears. It can't be much more worse than it is now.
thx Marina

Needing to urinate often on birth control pills
Well, glad I started researching this problem as well! I am 51 and had been on BCP's for 30 years! The most recent was seasonique for the past 5 years. I also had to urinate at least 3-5 times a night - FOR YEARS!! I would complain to my gyno and he said "overactive bladder", blah , blah, blah. I got along fine with the pills but have stopped them in the last couple of weeks because now I have menopause to deal with, awesome, and I have an increased risk of stroke in my family. So, I have noticed that now I get up only once a night. Major difference as it's been YEARS since I have been able to stay in bed that long! Also during the day, I went often. So it seems quite likely that stopping the pill has decreased my constant pee issues! I'll gladly take hot flashes, etc. over this constant aggravation of waking up several times a night to go. There HAS to be a connection for so many people to feel the same thing! Just wish the good dr's would wake up and see this.

Hi all, I don't know if anyone is still posting here. Currently I am writing this in bed at 4 a.m. and I am literally wearing a diaper. I am 28 years old. I feel humiliated, defeated and anxious. I started microgestin birth control pills about 3 months ago. And after reading this and crying a lot I am hoping and praying it is the culprit of my overactive bladder, incontinence and urgency issues. I thought I was getting a UTI around the time my period was starting but it is becoming obvious to me that it is not a UTI. I have had UTI's before and they aren't like this. My symptoms presently: there is no burning, no pain but just constant urgency AND frequency. I am getting up over 15x a night. Sleep has been impossible. Socializing, impossible. I am about to start an intense semester of school and hoping to take care of this problem by then because I have no idea how I will make it through sitting through classes like this.

If anyone has experience with their symptoms getting better after going off BC please post here again. How long did it take? Did your bladder go back to normal? Thank you and I hope everyone gets some answers and relief from this terrible problem.
