Piercing the skin without sterile instruments is harmful because of the possibilities of infection. Infection of the skin on or around the nose is potentially very dangerous because such an infection can spread to the cavernous sinus. The cavernous sinus (sinus cavernosus) is a pair anatomic structures that collect venous blood from the anterior part of the brain. There is a vein communication between cavernous sinus and veins that collect vein blood from the face so in some cases, infection can be spread from the facial skin to brain. Infection in the cavernous sinus can cause thrombosis, which is a life threatening condition.

To care of your piercing, you can consult your primary doctor to identify possible infection and seek advice.
