Hernia Mesh Complications
R. Hopkins, Indialantic, FL

I had mesh implanted 2005 for hernia repair. It has destroyed my life. This mesh is literally a "torture device" I have had three surgeries to remove it. Finally, I had to travel to Europe where all of it was removed, July 2, 2010. I had consulted with surgeons from Thomas Jefferson,Phila., John Hopkins, Balt., PennState Hershey to have it removed. They all knew of the problem, but are still using it. They refused to help in the most demeaming way. At Thomas Jefferson, the Surgeon even yelled at me for pressing him on the problem.
I have researched this problem for 4 years now. The Medical Community knows, but it has become "Torutre for Profit".
After last surgery in Europe, I have some hope. I have been mentoring many who have the same problem on were to go and see. There are surgeons out there who know how to deal with this. However, at present there only three in the world I would recommend. Two in the states and one in Europe. I found treatment in Europe shames this country, and the cost was affordable.
At present, from what I have learned. I consider the use of this mesh to be crimmal. Ask anyone who has had problems with it, and you will get a reply of, "It has desteroyed my life". And, they have told their Doctors, who in every case ignore their compliants.

Proceed Surgical Mesh
I have been reading through the entries here. I am having problems finding anything that gives me the lot numbers of my mesh. This is the second mesh I have had and it was sewn in april 07. Since then I have been in pain. When I go from sitting to standing it feels like my gut is tearing just like you would tear a piece of paper. Also hurts whenever i have a b.m. Finally found a dr. that doesn't think I am crazy but they are putting me through a crap load of tests before they will do anything. I have a history of adhesions and the first mesh they fastened it with "pigtails" which fell out causing the mesh to twist and causing abscesses in my tummy. took 2 surgeries to get all of the pigtails out. I am at a point I don't know what to do any more. I don't have a life anymore due to the pain. I just want this fixed and my life back!!!

Need help in Colorado!!!

Ok, here's my deal and I hope someone can help me out. I don't want to start tracking down manufacturers and the FDA unless it's actually warranted, as I do not know what I am dealing with.

In Feb. I had surgery to remove a part of my colon, intestine, and apendix due to Crohn's Disease. NO MESH. I got an insane infection which required a vac for the fluid and I was attatched to it for over 3 months. The surgeon informs me I have a hernia in June and he can do the operation the next week. OK, we have it done and I come home.

Now, it's been almost 3 months and I feel like I am being stabbed with fork tines in 2 different places every time I cough, sneeze, or laugh. BUT, in the last week, I've had 3 incidents where I suddenly get very hot, like I have spiked a very high fever and by the time my mind can register this, I am vomiting. Now, this doesn't feel like normal vomiting. It's not coming from the lower ab muscles, there's no gagging or dry heaves, something HAS to come out. When it does, it feels like my actual tummy is twisting to get it out. On each of these occasions, I've consumed different things (liquids 2x and solids 1x). Also, when I try to turn over in bed or sit up straight I can feel the stabbing.

They cannot say I've all of the sudden contracted a digestive disease, as I have a lot of them and they knew this. Crohn's Disease, IBS, gallbladder (at one time), and hysterectomy.

Does this sound like a mesh problem to anyone? The surgeon has released me, but thank God, my gp won't for a few more months. The surgeon released me about 8 weeks after the 2d operation and allowed me to "go back to my reg. activities" about 7 weeks after. My gp was furious and said "no way" when I saw him at 8 weeks after. He restricted me back to more rest, and no lifting or carrying anything heavier than 10 lbs for AT LEAST 6 months. He also reminded me the procedure had been performed LESS than 2 months earlier, although I didn't need to be told. He agreed to take over my care as most surgeons are more the "slash and dash" types. I called the surgeon that day and relayed (without the slash and dash comment) what the gp had said and he RELEASED ME!?!?!? OVER THE PHONE?!?!? He's not seen me again! I am calling the gp today, it's still 7:33AM here, but I have to wonder, DOES THIS SOUND LIKE THE MESH?!?!

I have had part of the colon and intestine also, no crohn's. I have a lot of the same issues. I have 3 different mesh implants, first was the Bard recalled mesh, it broke loose and grew into my stomach and intestines. They removed it and part of my intestines again. I coughed and they had to back in and remove the Proceed mesh because it broke loose. Now have a Strattice Lifecell mesh and am having issues again with the same issues and pain you are having. I hate the thought of having another surgery, but I know it is the mesh creating the issues.

YES IT SOUNDS LIKE THE MESH.

My husband had three surgeries for hernias...All in the same place...They used the mesh....It did not hold up...After the last surgery he was told not to lift over 10 to 15 pounds...They could not reattach or put in a new mesh anymore...It seems the tissue around this area has worn out...As you can see I have no use for the "mesh"....Take care...

Amanda, the answer to your question is yes, it is the mesh. First off the stabbing pains that you are feeling is because the mesh is beginning to harden and it will only get worse from here. Second, the mesh is a petroleum based product. Once it is in your body it will begin to leach chemicals in to your body, and your body's response is to expel it or reject it and try to push it out. It is possibly causing an auto-immune response now, because it can't get rid of it, which would explain your vomiting. By leaving the mesh inside of you, it will begin to mimic other disorders and your doctors will have you go thru a slew of tests, only for those tests to come back normal. Amanda, I know all of this because it is what happened to me. I had the mesh inside of me for 2 years. It hardened to the point that it began acting like a saw. It left me with a 3 inch tearin my pelvic floor, along with hundreds of smaller ripd and tears. It also destroyed the 3 main nerves that run thru my groin. I have now been diagnosed with CRPS/RSD, which is a degenerative nerve disorder. It took a surgeon 2 1/2 hours to dissect the mesh from my body. All I can suggest to you Amanda is to look to have it removed, before it gets worse, and trust me it will get worse. The sooner you can get it out, 1.) it will be easier to come out sooner rather than later and 2.)you will prevent a lifetime of pain and discomfort. I hope I was able to answer your questions. I don't mean to scare you but this mesh crap is poison to the human body. I have been researching this garbage for more than 5 years now and trust me you are not alone.
I hope you feel better and good luck to you. I am not a religous man but I will pray that you get thru this soon.

Has anyone had experience of the mesh acting up after weight loss,? I previously lost twenty five pounds and then a corner of my abdominal mesh came loose and that caused infection, that I needed an outpatient surgery and a week of iv antibiotics. I gained the weight back but I'm kind of afraid to try to lose it or strengthen the area.

what test will locate the mesh ,not seen in CT or Xrays ?
the pain is from crps+hernia mesh(google) repair, there are books written on the subject since the 90's. so it is aprofit thing and now who is going to fix millions of meshies? docs are in denial and we will not get relief until everyone goes to the FDA with report then the attorneys and docs will be forced to remove but will our bladders be stuck to our rectums by then?? neighbor had her mesh removed in 07 and no new mesh was used but she ended up in hospice and now has gangrene in both legs..I see my future is bleak...my mesh was 4"x5" supramesh put in laparoscopically in 2009. I just last week found out mesh was used when radiologist could see rings in xrays..He says your doc did not show you the mesh??he cannot see on this xray only the rings. I have burning face and awful pain in belly and no BMs or cannot pass gas since last year. went to ER in Dec and they sent me home with cipro and colitis meds..They know in ER it is mesh infection..1st question he asked do you have mesh in you?? I did not find out until 10 doc visits later.it was mesh since it was put in by that hospital..How do they locate the mesh? not seen in CT scan or small bowel studies..anyone know?? Thanks

I had an umbilical hernia repair with mesh in Jan of 2012. Since then Ive been plagued with Hives all over my body. At first I thought I was allergic to the percocet they gave me. But it just kept getting worse. I was told to take Allegra, which put a cap on the itching. When it didnt go away I was put on Prednisone. Which made the hives go away but my stomach hurt so bad I couldnt even touch it!. As soon as I quit the prednisone the hives came back and the pain in the navel/stomach never left. My Dr. refuses to think its the mesh. I am no doctor by any means, but Ive never been allergic to anything in my life. I had a foriegn object sewn in me and now my body cannot control itself. Its so frustrating. I am on Claritin (maybe this will work better than Allegra lol) And Zantac- another H2 blocker. 2 days ago I ended up in the ER bc of severe stomach pains. They did a CT and surprise, found nothing. I left with nausea medicine and with the dr. and nurse looking at me like I was crazy for even saying it was the mesh that was in me.
You will be told its an allergy, or your body needs time to heal. Or you will be completely blown off, they will dodge the questions.

During this whole process, I found a woman named Lana Keeton. She is the head of TruthinMedicine.us and everyone needs to check this page out. She referred me to Dr. Kevin Petersen of NIS in Las Vegas. I am in the process of going through Care Credit and getting my life back! His page is noinsurancesurgery.com

Plastic mesh hernia repair
I do not have all of the surgical specifications as yet, but I had a hernia surgery in Oct 2010 it was 3 hernias that were treated as one with some kind of plastic mesh. I was never comfortable after the surgery but was told it would get better in time. This past February 6, 2012 I elected to have gastric bypass surgery, the surgery started out to be a "lap" surgery. Problem is that when the surgeon made his incision he ran in to my small bowel being so wound up and poking through the mesh, that he had to remove bowel in order to complete my bypass. After the surgery I never healed and ended up spending a total of 66 days in the hospital so far. I have had surgery 5 times, I now have the pig mesh, and have gone through ICU almost died, had to have a wound vacum, and now I am home with a wide open wound where you can actually see the intestinal fistual. I am on IV Nutrition with nothing by mouth for at lest 4-6 more weeks. And still no guarantee that I still will not have yet another major surgery to correct this. I go to bed every night wondering if I am going to live through this ordeal. I would really like to sue/blame someone, I just don't know where to start. Any contributions or advice would be welcome.

Are These Symptoms Possibly Associated With Mesh?
Geez I am in shock after reading this entire forum. I can only offer appreciation for sharing all of the individual trials each of you has endured!

I didn't see too much that related to my own experiences. Can someone take a few minutes to read my experiences/symptoms to let me know if I'm crazy re: the consequences of a mesh repair of my hernia? (My initial hernia caused an intestinal blockage which required a second surgery at the same time as hernia repair)

1) weight loss of way over 20 lbs. I now weigh 89 lbs and am 5'6"
2) I developed a new hernia approximately 2 inches below the repair incision of the first hernia.
3) saw my surgeon and he wanted to repair 2nd hernia - which I haven't done yet. (Also he requested to take a picture of this new hernia with his cell phone - I said yes just seemed odd)
4) I have developed 5 small hard non-palpable lumps in a straight line from my pelvic bone to my pubic bone area.
5) It feels as if a tendon is being pulled tightly into my inner left leg from the groin area or pubic bone
6) For most part moderate pain (but that is such a subjective issue) through all of lumps into pubic area moving into pelvic floor. Additionally often when walking there is now pain from the pulling on the tendon into my leg which interferes with normal walking. (The pain there only occurs when leg is moving backwards)
7) I can actually feel the mesh from the outside of my body when I touch it with my fingers. The lumps appear to run along the end of the mesh possibly.

I'm no doctor and I'm aware you folks are not, but I would value someone's oppinion as to whether or not these 'complications' could be associated with a mesh problem?????

I will be following up on all the suggestions I read about on the forum ASAP. Thank you for those and sharing your stories and suggestions.

I have had 3 different mesh implants, in less than a year. Involved in a current law suit for the first recalled mesh by Bard. Second mesh was Proceed Ethicon, third mesh is Strattice Lifecell. Still having major issues, am now on disability, partly due to the issues created from these surgeries.
Here is the website URL for the FDA to search for recalled mesh. When you search only put in the name such as "Bard, Proceed, Strattice". It will tell you if they have had any recalls. Then you will need your product code, lot number to see if you have a recalled mesh. You can request all your surgical records from the hospital. In your surgery report the doctor should have put the supplies they used in surgery. It should list what was implanted and the name, product code, and lot number.
http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh /cf...
To file a complaint with the FDA regarding your implanted mesh go to this URL and follow the instruction. Doctors do not always file reports about issues with a product. File a complaint and be specific about the issues and the product. The more complaints they get about a product, then they will check into it and issue a recall or have the company check into complaints. Do not expect the doctor to do this for you. Take action for yourself, if enough people complain about this mesh product, something should be done.

Bilateral inguinal and femoral hernias hell.
Hi I'm a 35 year male who recently has undergone Rhs femoral repairs( open surgery with no mesh ,jan 2012) Rhs inguinal repair ( Lap with mesh march 2012) then Lhs femoral repair( open, no mesh ) and Lhs inguinal( Lap with mesh) both Lhs surgeries done in one sitting ( May 2012)

Its been around 6 months since my last surgery and I am still experiencing sharp stabbing pains around Rhs Inguinal repair site with stabbing shooting pains into testicles. Testicles always have a dull ache since surgeries.

I am also experiencing a tightness around incision sites where both femoral hernias have been repaired. This tight feeling in groin is accompanied by muscle spasms in and gurgling feelings in both legs and seems to be aggravated in the sitting position. Everyone has told me that due to having 4 surgeries in such a short space of time may have left me with excessive scar tissue. I am concerned that the surgeon has stitched me up to tight and the scar tissue is impinging on both femoral arteries. ( not cool) Could this be symptomatic of nerve entrapment?

I am going to a urologist to investigate the stabbing feeling I have in my testes, which at times accompany the pain with retraction and discoloration of the penis and scrotum. I am thinking that the mesh may be impinging on structures within the
inguinal canal or worse some sort or restriction of vascular structures of the groin.

I would love to hear from anyone that may be able to shed some light or has experienced similar symptoms.

I was also wondering if anyone has had 2 laproscopic repairs done within 2 months of each other. I am fearing that the second Lap surgery has destroyed the scar tissue from the first and second surgery leaving me a mess.

I am unable to have sex with my wife due to pain, I am unable to work, My old life seems to be slipping away.

Any response would be greatly appreciated.

I had a hernia repair done to my lower abdomen left side. After the surgery I was told they had to install mesh because the previous hernia surgery was a butcher job. This was done back in 2002. Since then I have had on and off problems with intense itching at the scare area also a pulling feeling and now a pain feels like a hot iron or burning at that area. Is this due to the mesh?
