My son is 7 years old and has had bouts of vomiting and diarrhea for the past 6 years. He wakes up at night with a cold sweat then stomach cramps, severe vomiting then diarrhea(green and watery). Everything occurs within 10-15 mins. then he has the cold chills. The next morning he appears to be weak and very dehydrated. Any ideas what this could be.
Thanks for you help
Nicole

Hi and welcome to the forum! I am glad that I can help you.

You would like to know the cause of the symptoms that your son experiences.

Abdominal cramps, severe vomiting, diarrhea, followed by dehydration are usually symptoms of bowel infection. Depending of the type of bacteria the symptoms may vary from a few hours to a few days. Sometimes the feces may be changed in color or mixed with pus, blood or mucus. To distinguish whether the cause is from bacterial toxins or bacteria, all these symptoms appear 2-6 hours after eating food and disappear in a few hours, but never longer than 24 hours, in case of intoxication. The symptoms would last longer in case of bacterial infection.

According to the data that you provided, your son's condition may be an infective cause. It can be due to food poisoning due to bacterial toxins and usually happens when creamy cakes, cookies, or mayonnaise are consumed. You might consider giving your son oral rehydration solutions in case of intoxication. You might need to have a bacterial culture from a stool sample in case the symptoms last more than 24 hours to rule out or confirm bacterial infection.

Please keep in mind that I provide medical information only. I am not able to diagnose medical conditions online. Please contact your son's doctor for further advice and information about diagnosis and treatment options.
