Spotting and heavy period after Norlevo

User Profile
I took the morning after pill Norlevo twice in my life...having two very different reactions. The first time was like nothing. I took it, felt a little moody and tired, but my next period came on time and was normal.

Now I'm experiencing something so different! And I'm nervous.
I took Norlevo (same exact type of morning after pill) and a few days later started spotting. Spotting lasted about a week.
"spotting" I thought, was light period-like discharge, but it was like having a brown period. (ew)...

spotting seemed to subside, for a day. then started my period! This period is much heavier than usual... and is lasting longer than usual (my usual period is 3-4 days...I'm on day 6 of bleeding.
I'm nervous this is not normal.
What's going on?
any feedback will be helpful,
thanks.

Hi,
Thanks for joining me on ehealth forum.

Have you taken the Norlevo immediately after the intercourse or within 12 hours of the unprotected intercourse?

The abnormal bleeding (brown bleeding and the prolonged period) that you are having could be a result of the Norlevo that you took for emergency contraception. It usually happens due to change in hormonal levels (after taking the pill) and also due to possible incomplete abortion (in case there was delay in taking the pill on time).

If the bleeding does not stop in next two days time, and/or it is accompanied with abdominal pain, then I recommend you to take professional help.

Report to your doctor or to ER and get a thorough examination and a pelvic ultrasound done to see if there are any products left inside the uterus which is causing you to have the prolonged bleeding.

Take care.
