slight knee pain and creaking sound

User Profile
Hi,I'm 33yr healthy male.I'm experiencing slight knee pain when i do tread-mill walk and also hear slight (creaking kind of)sound in knee when climbing down or up stairs from past 2 months.

I had a fall on knee in 2009 but didn't have any knee injury. It was just a skin & muscle tear which healed in a week.

I rarely have alcohol and never smoke. Thank you.

Welcome to the ehealthforum and I am really glad to help you out.

One of the possibilities for such knee pain is patellofemoral syndrome. It is common in young adults and causes pain between your patella and the underlying thighbone. It is diagnosed by examination of the knee and taking a careful history. Taking anti inflammatory pain killers and physiotherapy and exercises are quite helpful.

Other than that other possible causes which need to be ruled out are runner's knee which causes pain around the kneecap, any ligament injury or tendinitis which is inflammation of the tendons or the cord like structure joining the muscles to the bones.

To confirm the diagnosis, you need to get an evaluation done from an orthopedician. You may need investigations like x-ray, ultrasound or MRI scan of the knee joint to confirm the diagnosis. MRI scan is quite helpful in revealing injuries to soft tissues like cartilage, tendons, ligaments and muscles.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care.
