Some birth control makes your period lighter and less painful. Some can have the opposite effect. Nobody can tell you how your body will react to hormonal contraception. Sometimes it even gives you pregnancy-like symptoms (ironic, huh?).
You can always try a different type of pill if this one's causing you pain, but it usually settles down after a while. I've tried 3 types in 3 years now! I don't know what birth control you're on or how long you've been on it for, so I can't say much else.

As for the cramping, make sure you eat! Honestly, it does help, I used to suffer crippling menstrual cramps. Bananas are good, as is yogurt. Put a hot water bottle on your stomach and just rest until it passes a bit. Exercise is supposed to help anyway!
Light painkillers like Ibuprofen do work, if you give them a while to kick in.

Good luck!
