Hi,
Welcome to ehealthforum,
When a woman gets pregnant, the cervical mucus thickens to form a plug to prevent entry of infection (and sperms) into the uterine cavity and also prevents the uterine cavity contents from coming out. If the cervical mucus plug is intact (it may get damaged due to resident infection, pH changes etc) then the outside infection can get inside (as well as sperms if she has intercourse). The spotting that she describes during early pregnancy could be due to decidual bleeding or breakthrough bleeding. If worried, visit her doctor/gynecologist for further evaluation, clarification and assistance.
Take care.
