I generally recommend avoiding heavy lifting or other vigorous physical exertion for at least 30 days after surgery, and then a GRADUAL resumption of normal physical activity over an additional 2 to 4 weeks. Keep in mind that frequent heavy lifting and other types of vigorous exertion will increase your lifetime risk of hernia recurrence.
