Ran out of Levothyroxine, what can I take in it's place

User Profile
I had a total thyroidectomy 2 years ago, after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer. I have been on levothyroxine 125 mcg ever since. Recently, I have run out of my medication and I do not have health insurance at the moment. What can I take in it's place? I'm getting scared not having my meds. I don't want anything bad to happen to my health. I am tired alot! I have read a lot of bad thibgs can happen to my body without levothyroxine. Help!!

Thank you for asking at Ehealth forum!

I read your question and i understand your concern.
Thyroid extract USP can be used instead of thyroxine but it is not recommended because the ratio of T4 to T3 is not physiologic.
I hope it helps. Stay in touch with your healthcare provider for further guidance as our answers are just for education and counselling purposes and cannot be an alternative to actual visit to a doctor.
