"probably just a cyst", Should I be worrying?

User Profile
I've recently undergone a bone scan and something showed up relating to my kidneys (I'm not sure if it was "cold spot" or "hot spot"). My creatine levels are normal. My doctor said it's "probably just a cyst" and that I shouldn't worry. I have to wait at least 3 weeks for an ultrasound.

Should I be worrying? My nerves are shot.

Margaret

Welcome to e health forum.

The description in your history indicates the possibility of you having a simple renal cyst.

The simple kidney cyst is a fluid filled spherical space within the kidney. A simple kidney cyst has no risk of becoming a kidney cancer and is therefore nothing to worry about. Usually as age progresses 50% of most adults develop cysts in the kidneys which increase in size as well.

If you are over 40 years old , then the chances of you having such cysts increase.

Simple kidney cysts have no clinical implications. Usually, simple kidney cysts do not result in any symptoms and cause no harm to the body. On rare occasions, a cyst may cause symptoms such as flank pain, but this is quite unusual. If a simple kidney cyst is believed to cause pain or another symptom, it can usually be treated by a radiologist who can perform aspiration and sclerosis of the simple kidney cyst under radiographic guidance with ultrasound or CT scanning.

You might consult with your doctor for a examination and he might be able to clear all your doubts and anxiety.

Thank you for your quick response Doctor. This does ease my anxiety greatly. I suspect it may just be a cyst (I have no history of high blood pressure or diabetes). I do take synthroid and have mild inflammatory arthritis but other than that I'm healthy and maintain a healthy body weight.

Thanks again Dr.Anvekar!
