Prenatal vitamins Making my stomach Hurt !

User Profile
I am 6 weeks pregnant I've been taking my prenatal vitamins but every time I take them they give me bad stomach pains, that last for up to 15 minutes. At first I took them before i ate and i thought maybe I need to eat before taking them. But either way they make my stomach HURT! I'm not sure i should continue taking them.I hope it's not harmful to the baby.

Any suggestions ?

Hi,
Welcome to ehealthforum,
The symptoms could be due to gastritis. Consider reporting your symptoms to your treating doctor/gynecologist and request for prescription of antacid/gastric acid suppressors (safe ones that can be used during pregnancy). Keep diet simple and healthy and space out your meals into small ones taking every 3-4 hours. Drink plenty of water. Avoid caffeinated and carbonated beverages.
Take care.

If you are taking a commercial prenatal vitamin such Centrum, you could be allergic to any of the fillers, colors, presevatives, wheat etc. that are typically added to them.

I would go to a real health store and find a natural prenatal vitamin. It will cost a bit more than the commercial brands. Take the natural vitamin with meals.

In the meanwhile, do not over indulge in junk foods, sugar, fried foods, pasturized diary and too much meat. These are acid forming foods that will make your stomach lining inflammed (gastritis). Make sure you are eating plenty of fresh whole foods and plain organic yogurt instead.

Also, healthy green smoothies help with stomach inflammation and are certainly safe and good for the fetus.

Also, just so you know, Centrum or One a Day or any grocery store vitamins especially Costco's have a coating that will not digest in the stomach. You won't be absorbing the vitamin at all. A natural vitamin won't hurt your stomach and your body will absorb at least 80%.

Have a healthy pregnancy!

I had a similar problem in my first trimester and switched to a prescription prenatal vitamin. The prescription (Citra Natal B-Calm) did improve my stomach problems but not enough for me to be satisfied. I switched again to Prenatal Gummies that I found at Babies R Us. They are working just fine, but you may need to take other supplements as they don't contain iron and I needed to take a Vitamin D supplement with it.
