Pregnant, stressed, or psyching myself out

Hello all,

So I noticed that I was experiencing some spotting starting the other day. When I first saw it, it was a blob of brownish blood on the toilet paper I used to wipe myself. The spotting was presenting every time I would go to the bathroom, although not as prevalent, and it last for two days. I am a little worried this could be an early symptom of pregnancy but I am also wondering if it could have been stressed induced, although if that is the case, this would be the first time it has ever happened to me. I was recently in a car accident and suffered back and neck injuries from it. Nothing major, but because it has been keeping me from leading a normal life, it has been causing a lot of stress.

Well the reason I can't settle for one explanation or the other is because the spotting was accompanied by some light cramping, so I don't know if I can attribute that to stress. Today I am feeling strong episodes of nausea and I am feeling tenderness in my breasts, however my period is not due for another 2 weeks.

A reason I am skeptical that I'm pregnant is because of the oddness of the time table and the sexual encounter. My last period began the 25th of December, my husband and I had sex on the 2nd of January. I am not on birth control and we did not use a condom, however he did not ejaculate inside of me. He felt the urge to cum and immediately pulled out, and a couple of seconds later, he began to cum. Now, because my last period began the 25th, I don't see how we could have conceived on the 2nd. Wouldn't that be too soon after my period to be ovulating? My spotting began Monday, which was the 9th, exactly one week from the night we had the unprotected sex. Would this not be too soon for me to be spotting? And as far as the nausea and the breast tenderness goes, I just feel that the symptoms are also coming too early and that it is mostly my mind playing tricks on me.

Given the description and the fact that pregnancy by pre-cum has a low percentage of probability, do you all feel that I may have spotted due to the physical and emotional stress of the accident and it could have brought on a "mini-period" which was accompanied by all the unpleasantness of a normal period? Or do you all feel there is a possibility I could actually be pregnant? Thank you all so much for your time! You have no idea how much I appreciate it.

Hi,
Welcome to ehealthforum.
For a regular menstrual cycle of 28-30 days, the usual fertile days would lie between days 8-18 taking day 1 as first day of bleeding. The sexual encounter could have resulted in pregnancy. Sperms can stay alive for 3-5 days once released inside you, and egg once released from ovary can stay alive for 6-7 days. Pullout/withdrawal method of contraception is associated with highest failures (pre-cum/pre-ejaculatory fluid is known to contain sperms and no man can be 100% sure that pre-cum/pre-ejaculatory fluid did not leak out during vaginal penetration). Your recent symptoms (spotting, light abdominal cramps, brown discharge, nausea, breast tenderness) could also be suggestive of pregnancy. The spotting could also suggest probable implantation. Wait and watch for your periods and look out for development of any new symptoms suggestive of pregnancy. If you do not get periods within 10 days of expected period dates, or if you get abnormal periods, or if you develop any new symptoms, or if you suspect chances of pregnancy, you should consider visiting your doctor/gynecologist for thorough examination (to confirm pregnancy related changes/signs in body) and blood/serum HCG level test (to confirm/rule out pregnancy accurately). Be in regular monitoring and follow-up with your treating doctor/gynecologist and report any new/abnormal symptoms immediately. Drink plenty of water. Take adequate rest. Maintain healthy diet.
Take care.
