I have numbness in left hand fingers and left foot toes on lying down. I feel Ok on raising the hand above my head or moving the foot around?

Not only do I experience numbness in my left hand while I sleep it also happen during times of inactivity. My doctor suggested carpal tunnel. He seems to think it is the result from excessive exercise. I have played the guitar for years. He suggested surgery but I am afraid it might affect my playing.
