nearly impossible to get any food down without....

User Profile
Hello,

Since June 2012 I have felt an extreme tightness, seemingly in the muscles of my neck, primarily in the right area of the throat just right of the Adam's Apple. I have tried GERD medication, anxiety/muscle relaxer medication, and anti-Histamines, but with no success. The tightness is present whether I'm eating or not eating. When I do eat, it is nearly impossible to get any food down, unless I take a muscle relaxer (Xanax). After this is taken I can eat but very slowly (usually takes 1 hour to eat a small portion of food) and this food must be soft.
I also experience occasional chest pain/tightness, which seems to have no correlation with eating.

I've spent many days doing research over my symptoms, but have still not found any answers. I am beginning to lose hope with my situation. I just started my master's degree in Electrical Engineering and I'm not sure how I will manage through this. I miss being a normal guy. Hope you can help. Thanks in advance.

Ear, Nose and Throat Disorders Answer A39544
Hello,

Welcome to ehealthforum and thanks for writing

According to the description provided by you it seems that you are suffering from Dysphagia which can be due to various reasons as issues in the muscles and nerves that move the throat and esophagus, any blockage in the throat due to esophagitis, gerd, diverticuls, tumours, decreased saliva etc.

It requires a proper detailed evaluation to comment regarding the exact cause. Various tests as Laryngoscopy, manometry, Fluorscopy might be required and if done can be repeated so that the exact cause can be rule dout.
Kindly visit a ENT specialist for repeat evaluation. Along with that neurologist and speech language pathologist can also be considered for analysis.

Take care!
