Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease, which is characterized by chronic inflammation of the airways of the lungs. This inflammation makes the airways hypersensitive and increases their response to allergens or irritants present in the environment. As the inflammation progresses, the airways get narrower, and this in turn hampers the normal flow of air into the lungs. The change in structure and function of the lungs causes symptoms like wheezing, cough, difficulty in breathing, production of phlegm and chest congestion. These symptoms often worsen at night and early in the morning.

If you are experiencing symptoms of asthma, it's important to see your doctor to be properly diagnosed.A study involving 60 people with asthma compared the effects of the Buteyko Breathing Technique, a device that mimics pranayama (a yoga breathing technique), and a placebo. Researchers found people using the Buteyko Breathing Technique had a reduction in asthma symptoms. Symptoms didn't change in the pranayama and the placebo groups.
