my throat starts salivating excessively when i walk outside

User Profile
Hi,

Whenever I go for a walk outside, my throat starts salivating excessively. I have to literally spit every 3-4 minutes during the walk. I am a little concerned that there may be an inflamed area around the throat which becomes dry and cause the body to produce excess saliva. When I run outside, this phenomenon does not happen.

I am an ex smoker (47 years old). Just before I quit, I had a smokers cough and saw blood in the phlegm in the sink and decided to quit the same day.

I may also have acid reflux. There are times that I feel that someone has kept a sharp blade in the area under my tonsils which makes my throat itch and my cough worse.

any insight will be appreciated.

Ear, Nose and Throat Disorders Answer A47962
Hello,

Welcome to the ehealthforum and I am glad to help you out.

I can understand your concern for these symptoms but the symptoms are suggestive of post nasal drip which occurs when excessive mucus is produced by the sinuses. The excess mucus accumulates in the throat or back of the nose. It can be caused by rhinitis, sinusitis, or laryngopharyngeal acid reflux. In your case, gastroesophageal acid reflux is an important possibility.

Other than that, since you were a smoker and had an episode of blood in sputum as well, it needs a detailed evaluation. I will suggest getting a microscopic examination of the sputum done to find out the cause . It is also better to rule out get a chest X-ray or a CT chest done to rule out any lung cause like any infection, inflammation or any benign or malignant growth of the lung.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
