Am I depressed?

For the past few months my emotions have been a crazy wreck. It started a few months ago, I'd randomly break down for no reason or feel totally overwhelmed. Well now its becoming more frequent and its seems like I cant go a day with out being on the verge of tears or crying in my room for hours. I started birth control around the same time this started, so I thought it just might be messing with my hormones. But I'm starting to think that this isn't just hormones anymore. I know I sleep way to much but its all I want to do, and I'm pretty much repulsed by my every day life. And the only thing that truly makes me happy right now is my boyfriend. Hes always so sweet and I just instantly feel comfort when I'm with him, but unfortunately I live in a house hold where I'm 18 and still cant even go to a guys house and I have no way way of getting around it. Witch makes me even more frustrated and angry witch leads to more crying...I feel hopeless..I feel so stuck ):

Hello,

Welcome to the ehealthforum and I am really glad to help you out. Your concern is regarding the mood swings and other symptoms that you are having. From your symptoms, it seems that you are having depression. It is not only characterized by sad and/or irritable mood but by neurovegetative symptoms like crying spells, body aches, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, low energy or libido, as well as problems with eating, weight, or sleeping.

The first line of treatment is by cognitive therapy and counseling and hypnotherapy. I would suggest that you consult a psychiatrist as you may need to start with antidepressants. Most of them belong to the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Other drugs like tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are also there, but SSRIs have fewer side effects and are generally well tolerated.

I sincerely advice you to follow up with a good psychiatrist and take the medicines prescribed regularly. Patience is required because the treatment of depression takes time and sometimes a combination of treatments may be required.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care.
