mesothelemia cancer. low sodium. How much water?

User Profile
My dad 76 yrs has been diagnosed with aggressive mesothelemia cancer. His very frail but on leaving hospital he suffered with low sodium. He constantly asks for water and I'm not sure if we are giving him enough to drink or giving him too much ? His urine output is sometimes 500 ml other days 1000ml, is this normal? Concerned for two reasons. 1. If we not giving him enough water he can't get dehydrated. 2. If we give him too much with his condition (plural) then his lungs are filling with water and he will have to have a drainage which we avoiding again. Pl help .

Welcome to e health forum.

With his underlying condition and Since he has a risk of developing low sodium (Hyponatremia) and possible pleural effusion, keeping him under fluid restriction (under 1000 ml per day) would be recommended.

But it would always better to confirm with the treating doctors for patient specific instructions.
