justina8888,

I am assuming that this is coming from a report on a study of some type (MRI, CT, x-rays, etc). It is difficult to say anything definitive, when just a small part is taken out of context.

But, in general, the term mass effect, means whatever the finding the is, it is being caused by a mass. A mass will tend to push things out of the way or compress them.

So, the S1 nerve root may be being pushed over, in the neural foramen, or compressed in the same area.

But, it is difficult to say, without actually seeing the films, or the rest of the report.

Good luck.
