looking for tips as to what we could do to help

My husband and I have been trying to conceive for about a year now. He was a heavy drinker/ smoked Marjuana for awhile now he doesn't do anything he's completely sober. Just looking for tips as to what we could do to help. Also was wondering if having necrotizing entercolitis which caused the doctor to have to do surgery which gave me a large scar on my stomach as a baby could cause me to be infertile.

Hi, and thanks for your query on eHealth forum!

Necrotizing enterocolitis is unlikely to cause any problem. If you have been trying to conceive for some time without success, please consult your healthcare provider for further guidance. Your husband should undergo a semen analysis even if he is sober now.

Also, if the semen analysis results are ok, then female causes will need to be looked into. There are various reasons for this like ovum not being formed, polycystic ovary, hormone imbalance, hypothyroidism, local infection, blocked tubes etc. In males it can be infection, STD, varicose veins, hydroceles, poor sperm count, not enough motile sperms etc. Since a confirmed diagnosis cannot be given on net and without running some basic tests please discuss these possibilities with your gynecologist once.

You may need tests like Hsg or hysterosalpingography, laproscopy , hormonal level and pelvic sonography, glucose challenge test, thyroid profile, ultrasound guided graffian follicle maturation (in this the growth of ovum is monitored by ultrasound and then specific drugs as needed are given for ovulation and maturation of ovum) and antisperm antibody test. PAP smear, STD panel are the other tests done.

Meanwhile place a pillow under the hip while having sex. Let your husband gently pull out. Immediately push your knees up to your abdomen. This will increase the pelvic tilt. Remain like this for 5 mins and then stay in bed with pillow under the hips for 15-20 minutes. Then only remove the pillow. Some semen will still run out, do not worry about that. Try in this position for 3-4 months. Keep a check on your ovulation timing (through an ovulation prediction kit) and try close to that several times. Remember in your case both timing and position is important. If still you do not conceive, then consult a specialist.

This reply to your query is just for education and counseling purposes and cannot be an alternative to actual visit and treatment by a doctor who can examine you. Hope this helped you in making an informed decision about your health. Take care!
