Hi,
Welcome to ehealthforum,
Intercourse close to period time or use of emergency contraception close to period time can delay periods due to hormonal changes. If the emergency contraception is taken within 24-48 hours of unprotected intercourse, it should help in preventing pregnancy. Withdrawal bleeding usually occurs within 7-10 days of taking the emergency contraception. She should consider waiting and watching for periods. If periods are more than 10 days delayed (from expected period dates), or if she gets abnormal periods, she should consider visiting her doctor/gynecologist for further evaluation and assistance. If pregnancy gets ruled out and if you intend to remain sexually active, consider getting her started on suitable regular birth control measures to be protected (after her periods). She should be regular with birth control use as instructed. Avoid having unprotected sexual contact.
Take care.
