is the day after pill necessary?

Hello,
My girlfriend and I had unprotected sex and I did not ejaculate inside her. She is on her period but wasn't bleeding at the time of sex. She is bleeding today(day after) with a normal flow. is it still possible she could get pregnant. is the day after pill necessary???

Hi, and thanks for your query on eHealth forum!

If this was any day between 1st to 4th day of her period or a day just before her period and you did not ejaculate in her, then since this a safe time of the cycle, she need not take i-pill or any emergency contraception. However, is she was bleeding mid cycle, and this was not her actual period date, then yes, she must take emergency contraception within 48 hours. Pills taken within 72 hours may also show some effect. Hope this helps. Take care!
