Is sex the reason why I won't start my period?

My boyfriend and I had sex the day before I was supposed to start, and I never started my period I am now over a week late and kind of nervous. Do you think I haven't started because we had sex or should I take a pregnancy test?

Hello, Welcome to the ehealthforum and I am really glad to help you out.

There are several reasons why a woman have delayed menstruation and this could be due to unhealthy diet, stress (emotional or physical), sudden weight gain or loss, caffeine, alcohol, and smoking. Gynecological conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and uterine cysts or polyps, can also bring about alteration in menstrual cycle. However, pregnancy is still the most common cause of delayed or missed period.

So if there is a history of any unprotected intercourse then pregnancy should be ruled out. However having intercourse one day prior to start of periods won't result in pregnancy.

I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and regards.
