Interstitial Cystitis cure ?

User Profile
Is there a cure for Interstitial Cystitis? About 7 yrs ago the symptoms started. I woke up in the middle of the night having to urinate and had a difficult time emptying my bladder. I urinated, and felt like there was more left, but it didn't want to come out right away. I think I had sex that night. After a few days, I went to the doctor and he put me on some kind of sulfur antibiotic (not sure of the exact name) for a bladder infection. He tested my urine and he also gave me some pills for the irritation, which did help. I took all of the pills as prescribed for 10 days. I didn't feel like there was any improvement, but I didn't return to the doctor because I didn't have insurance. I went back a couple of years ago thinking maybe he could give me a better medication. He prescribed the same thing, after 10 days I returned immediately and he put me on Cipro, which didn't help. I asked my gyno to check me out, she said my urine was clean and I didn't have an infection. I'm so frustrated

Hi,

Welcome to the ehealthforum. I am glad to help you out. I can understand the pain and agony you’re going through. The diagnosis of interstitial cystitis is made once the other causes of cystitis have been ruled out. The only specific tests for the diagnosis are cystoscopy and diagnostic hydrodistension of the urinary bladder. However, I must reassure you that dietary and fluid management, time and stress management, and behavioural modification are the most important and effective ways for treating this condition. Elmiron is the only drug which has been found to be somewhat effective but that also should be used only after the before mentioned measures fail.

I’ll suggest you to consult a urologist for the confirmation of the diagnosis and treatment. I sincerely hope this information helps. Take care.
