i have a seriouse question here. im a 25y/o athletic male in pretty good shape. A week ago i started having really sharp abdominal pains on my lower right hand side. It hurt so bad i could not even stand up strait or walk normally. I left work and went to the ER as this alerted me as my appendix. When i got checked in they immediatly gave me morphine and began testing. They took blood, urine, and took a ctscan with contrast! 4 hours later they tell me my urine is fine, my white blood cell count is normal, and the ctscan was perfect! diagnosis...accute abdominal gastric pressure! two days later, still bent in pain, i went to my doc. she done the same tests and confirmed my appendix was gangrenous and had ruptured! i spent 5 days in the hospital but am doing great thanks to god and my awesome doc. But finally heres my question... How long does it take for an appendix to become gangrenous, and then rupture?

Appendix and Appendicitis Answer A18851
Hello, and thanks for your medical question on E Health Forum. I am glad that I can help you.

The early stage of appendicitis which usually lasts 4-48 hours, and complete picture of typical appendicitis develops by 48 hours. In untreated cases with persisting pain, perforation and gangrene develops by 72 hours after initial presentation.

A properly performed CT scan with modern equipment has a detection rate (sensitivity) of over 95% and a similar specificity. A CT scan done in the very early stages of appendicitis, can miss the condition due to the near normal appearance of the infected appendix.

I hope you find the information here helpful.
