Prevention of liver cancer is possible at two levels. The first level of prevention is to avoid alcohol abuse and to prevent the occurrence of Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C.

The spread of Hepatitis B can be curbed by universal vaccination of all newborns and the rest of the non-infected population.

The second level of prevention is in patients who have liver cirrhosis. A significant proportion of them will develop cancer. This can be avoided if they undergo a timely liver transplant and the diseased liver can be removed. All those with cirrhosis should see a liver specialist to find out if a liver transplant is suitable for them.

Some ways to avoid risk factors that have been linked to liver cancer:

Avoid activities that increase the risk of exposure to the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). These activities include using intravenous drugs, having many sex partners, and handling human blood or fluids without protection. Also, be sure to ask your doctor if you should get the hepatitis B vaccine. If you are at risk for HBV or HCV infection, ask your doctor about getting tested. For people who are infected, drugs are available that can keep the infections in check or even cure them in some people. This may lower your risk of liver cancer.

Avoid drinking a lot of alcohol to reduce your risk of cirrhosis, a disease of the liver that increases the risk of liver cancer.

Avoid any raw food that may contain the fungus Aspergillus flavus, which releases toxins that can lead to liver cancer.

Liver cancer can be treated in different ways. Treatment depends on the stage of your cancer. It also depends on how healthy your liver is (in other words, how serious your liver disease was before you got cancer). The different treatments include:

Surgery - Liver cancer can sometimes be treated with surgery to remove the part of the liver with the cancer.

Liver transplant - A liver transplant is a type of surgery in which a doctor replaces a diseased liver with a healthy liver from another person.

Ablation therapy - Ablation therapy is a procedure that can kill cancer cells in the liver. It does not involve surgery. Doctors can do ablation therapy in different ways. They can kill the cancer cells using heat, a laser, radiation therapy, or by injecting a special alcohol directly into the cancer.

Chemotherapy - Chemotherapy is the medical term for medicines that kill cancer cells or stop them from growing.
