how do cough drops work if the epiglottis covers the larynx when you swallow?

Hello and welcome to e health forum.

The idea of cough drops is to soothe the inflamed mucus membranes of the pharynx, so that the irritation is reduced, hence reducing the urge to cough.

It does not mean , that the ingredients and secretions in the cough drops have to enter the larynx and windpipe. If such a thing happens, then aspiration of the secretions can result in pneumonia and lung complications.
