his mom has had herpes basically her whole life, so...?

User Profile
My boyfriend just found out that his mom has had herpes basically her whole life, so he might have it too. My boyfriend and I have had oral sex only. What is the chance that I have herpes when he has never had an outbreak? This is the worst time to figure this out :( Considering I might be pregnant.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases Answer A40464
Hi,
Welcome to ehealthforum,
If he has acquired the infection, he can remain asymptomatic but be able to transmit the infection. If in doubt, or if you are worried, you can consider requesting for getting screening tests done or a serological test done to confirm/rule out infection. The outbreaks of herpes can occur anytime when either your immunity goes down, or if the viral load becomes more. Other triggers include stress, illness, surgery, vigorous sex, diet, menstrual period time, trauma, alcohol use, pregnancy, etc. The outbreaks can also get frequent as you grow old, and also women are known to have severe form of disease and outbreaks than compared to men. Consider visiting your doctor/dermatologist for further evaluation and assistance and discuss about need for prophylactic treatment.
Take care.
