High Blood Pressure during period (Page 4)

BP and menstruation
When I was 36 I had a stroke. Ever since, I panick when I don't feel right, which is every month during my period. This blog is helpful in that it shows I am not alone but I agree that answers are needed. Knowing we are not crazy is one thing, getting control of our bodies during this time is another. Every month I fear I am going to have another stroke because my body changes during menstruation. For those of you that can, I would suggest asking your dr about hormone therapy. I do not qualify for this because of my stroke and will have to deal with it until I am in full menopause. It is comforting to know how many other women feel the same as I do. Thank you all for posting.

Higher Blood Pressure During Menstruation
I just decided to google this problem, and I am very relieved to find so many women are going through the same thing, but disappointed that everyone has received such condescending and dismissive responses by physicians. I had always had normal blood pressures (120/80)until the eighth month in my first pregnancy when it first reached 140/90. I flipped!! But I was told that that was normal at that stage of pregnancy. It has never really gone back to normal for long periods of time. I was 31 at that time, and I am now 39. I went to the emergency room a few times with dizziness and headaches with blood pressures about 155/98 unitl I realized it was at the same time as my period. Then I stopped going but I monitor at home. This past week, I got up to 198/110, and I'm on BP medication now. I take Benicar. I thought it was the weight gain, because no matter what I do, I seem to keep gaining. I had very horrible periods growing up. I had very severe stomach and back cramps, vomiting and dizziness. I have started really keeping a log and monitoring everything going on, so hopefully I can reach the bottom of this. Hopefully what I find will help someone else too.

Do you get High BP & Fluid Overload @ the end of your period
I have been having this problem for the last 2 years. My blood pressure medication has been increased or changed to combat the high blood pressure. My blood pressure has been as high as 180/110 when I checked in to the ER. I have been give lasix to remove the fluid because I also swell up in the legs and feet as soon as by period is over. It starts that last day and takes 4-7 days before everything is back to normal. My cardiologist just thinks I am odd for bringing it up at my appointments. There has got to be some type of expert who knows exactly what is going on and how to solve it, before I have a stroke.

Hi.

I was went for a health check yesterday and my BP was 136/100. I was quite shocked as I'm only 30 and this is the first time I've had a high reading. I realized it might be due to being on my period at the time. It makes sense that you become more hypertensive during your period as fluid retention is a common problem at that time and fluid retention goes hand in hand with hypertension.

I found this article where women had there blood pressure taken regularly at different times in their cycle. Their systolic BP (the top number) was higher during their periods, and diastolic BP increased even more. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1657498

I have been diagnosed with Hypertension 2. So, I am taking a low dose of Lisinopril at the tender age of 38. (lol). That was three months ago. I found out in the ER. I was actually applying for a driving job, well, to make a long useless story short, I went to take my BP at Walmart. (thank you Walmart! can't beat free!)I exercise 3 times a week, for 3 hrs, and I have cut all salt from my diet, and eat only natural foods. My BP went from 192/122 in the ER to a steady 129/88, at least until today. it jumped up to 145/103 and it is freaking me out, and yeah, I am on my period, third day. last time I had my period? the emergency room. this sucks. My periods are gonna kill me! now, when I was in the ER, they did a chest scan, heart was normal. all my readings were normal. I TOLD them I was on my period, and they blew it off. Do I have Anxiety Disorder? well, I do. I was diagnosed back in 2006 before all this crazy stuff started. And, I went against the DR's orders, and stopped taking my meds, mainly do to the fact I am too poor to have a disorder. (LOL!!!)So I haven't taken them in 4 years, and I think I will follow up with my Doctor in January about my mess up. I thought there was some type of correlation between my periods and my HBP and Perimenopause, and Anxiety attacks, and here I am. Now, I just need to figure where to go from here, and try to stay alive. Seems like everyday now I wonder if I am going to wake up to see the next day.

I am 42 years old and didn't think to check my blood pressure during the beginning or week before my period. I had a problem where I took off my rings to clean and put them back on. I went to change them around as I had gotten a couple new rings and my one wouldn't come off. I tried everything and then with so much swelling and redness on my finger went to ER to have the ring cut off. When I showed them my problem they took my info and then my blood pressure which was 199/108. I could feel myself freaking inside as it's NEVER been that high in my life! I am trying to find a connection with it being raised and my monthly, or just about a week before starting. My father has had high blood pressure for years and a massive stroke years ago, but is fine and talking to him a while back, I mentioned it's been higher lately. One thing he told me that a DR told him was to take the chewable vitamin C when it's up and chew 3-4, drink water and give about ten minutes check it again. I did just that and sure enough it came down. As low as I would've liked? NO but enough to stop panicking. I've read the posts here and wow I really did think I was alone in this, but can't believe how many woman have this problem. I have an anxiety disorder and take effexor for it, and also clonazepam 0.5mg up to three times a day as needed which I'm lucky to take one a day, but when it's up there my BP, I take one and it does help me calm to bring it down a bit. This seeing a holistic Dr is very interesting as I know nothing of them, but am willing to look into that. Thanks for sharing, I do feel better simply knowing there's many others out there, and yes headache during the night just before the morning I wake up and notice I'm starting my cycle, that's a new symptom for me too! Take care girls and I will try to find out all else I can too and post what I come up with. Have a SAFE and happy holiday, and keep that BP down best you can as will I try too Smile

High Blood pressure maybe due to period?
In Nov at my papsmear my bp was normal. As far as I can tell - always normal. Last Saturday less than a week before my period (which has become awful at age 42 and I spot during the month too) I discovered at ER my bp was 170 over 107 - when i got my period the night before I had the worst headache and all week high during period. I will take it tomorrow and see if it is down. But I took one bp pill last night of 5 mg but plan on taking no more until I investigate further. I know its all related to my period - or premenapausal - I get it every 21 to 24 days - I feel like I get no break. Im thinking maybe hysterectamy will help??

Hello,
I have HBP that goes up during my period too. But I also have HBP that is hard to control sometimes even with medication. I'm 42 years and what I have is called renal stenosis. I have an artery that leads to my kidney that is kinked. Whether it is hereditary or not the doctors don't know for sure what are the causes. If any of you have been having HBP that seems to be hard to control with meds. please mention this to your doctor. My doctor told me it is a condition that most doctors don't know about. (I went through 4 doctors before I was able to find out what was wrong with me). My doctor had a hunch due to medical reading he was updating himself on. Studies are now beginning to suspect there are many women out there with this condition. My doctor says my HBP can possibly be cured. But as it stands right I have to wait till I'm at least 65% closed before the doctors can put a stent in that part of my artery, right now I'm 50%. Everyday, I have to check my BP, watch my diet & keep taking my pills. Today I checked at 141/73 but I've been way higher! I guess this would be considered one of my better days. We still have to adjust my pills to find the right one but it is difficult since it involves my kidneys...and our kidneys do help to regulate our BP. Anyways, just spreading the word out there because I noticed that some of you seem to have similar problems like me. It's worth a try to ask your doctor about renal stenosis if you both are having a hard time controlling your BP with meds.

blood pressure goes up during menstrual period
look up L-argnine L pyroglutamate its lowers your blood pressure . I just ordered
l-arginineplus from L-arginineplus.com. my blood pressure was 150/90 when I went to the doctor he prescribed some beta blocker. But if I start taking them you have to gradually taper off of them and while your tapering off you have to limit your activity. I decided to take a natural approach the L-arginine lowers your blood pressure naturally, and the formula i ordered fixes so the l-arginine works all day.
I hope this helps. I'm on my period now and my blood pressure is 140/90. This is a real bummer. before my period starts the week before I break out real bad, my scalp gets real irritated in places and breaks out too. It sucks. I did manage to get the PMS under control- I read a book called PMS cure which you can get on line from PMScure.com. the book is written by a doctor you tells you have to get rid of PMS naturally. I hope this helps.

High BP Periods
I'm 26, and after having my 2nd child I was told I have high blood pressure at the time it was 130/76. The nurse told me I was to watch out if I have a headache I could have a stroke/heart attack and die! I went home with my newborn baby and freaked out til I was back at the hospital with 150/101. Now I'm on 15mg of Lisinopril, but I went down to 10mp because my BP had been in the 90s/60s then I started to get my period this week and it started to rise and has been high the whole time. Sad I wish someone would find out whats going on, I always thought this anxiety and this now high when I'm bleeding BP was from hormones and every time I tried to talk to a doctor they look at me like I'm crazy. Someone needs to find out!

Pressure spike during menstruation cycle
You ladies have no idea, how relieved I am to find that I'm not alone in this. I'm 40 and weight 140 pounds, I've always had normal pressure but I realized that my pressure was in the range of 130/90 - 140/100 during my period (but I wasn't dizzy or having any symptom). My husband told me that it could be due to my period and here I am.

Instead of taking any medicine, I am taking Arjin ( a traditional herbal formula from India) about 3 tablets, twice/thrice daily. I'll be seeing my homeopathy doctor and will post the follow up. I really do not want to be tied down modern drugs. From what I know, it(clinical pressure tablets) can cause other implications.

I would also suggest meditation and yoga.

I'm 40 and i'm experiencing this problem for some time and it usually happens during my period, my high bp is usually followed by a panic attach and the feeling is really scary.i've got another problem, a fear from measuring my bp because at the second i see the machine my pulse is going crazy.after i've read that i'm not the only one i feel mush better but still i don't know what to do cause i'm terrified of visiting the doctor.i regularly check my blood test and it is always excellent and it seems that is the only thing i'm not afraid of.i have a 5 year daughter, i breast fed her for about 2 years and that was the healthiest period of time so it has probably everything to do with hormons

High blood pressure and painful periods
Just to let you all know ladies: If you take Ibruprophen for painful periods, this raises blood pressure over time. This was big news (front page) in London, England. So keep off that if you can

Menstrual link to high blood pressure, migraine, anxiety, etc
Oh my goodness! I feel like a slow learner: I have only just put together the link between my period, my migraines, and finally, the high blood pressure readings that occur in the week and first 2 days of my cycle. I feel like my head's going to blow off, and extremely agitated! Apparently I am also not easy to live with at this time (go figure...). It is reassuring to find out that this is not my own peculiar situation but shared by many women my age (47yo). At least now I have a platform to work from with my Doctor.

I'm 52 and have experienced the same as some of you above. I thought it was hereditary because my grandfather and mother had heart conditions.Never crossed my mind that it could be hormonal and cyclic. I have been doing some searching of my own and I have decided to make a little booklet for our women's centre here in NZ with all the information I can find on symptoms of high blood pressure in women and what people are experiencing. I want to be able to provide as much content on what people have found helps reduce BP naturally without drugs. I wonder if anyone wants to contribute by telling me what they wanted to find out first and any stories/tips on what has helped you. Apple cider vinegar is something I find really helpful. Oh and I would be happy to send you a copy of my booklet when it is done.

I am 39 years old 40 in November. In the last 4-6 months was experiencing feels of dizziness, light headed. I often feel this during the onset of my cycle. Been to the doctor between January-May and had all kind of test. CT of brain, body, ultra sound of thyroid, nerve conduction study, blood work to find out my sodium and cholestorol level is good. Mri of cervical spine. After going to my Phsyc it was concluded that I have depression, my mind is always going/thinking and that I have generalized anxiety. During my cycle, before and after I feel out of it and have a migraine that always starts on the left side. The doctors say that that is where I hold a lot of my tension. I take xanax as needed and it does calm me down, allows me to rest and reduces my pressure. Readings are normally normal but I have had readings of 156/102 at some point which is high but as the doctor said not as high as risk of strokes or heart attacks. I monitor it at least 3 times a week and often ok. 127/82 136/80. So i am debating biting the bullet and just starting a blood pressure pill. Better safe than sorry. Good Luck to us all!

HBP before/during menstruation
This is incredible! I JUST realized as well that there could be a connection between my episodes of HBP and my periods. Until recently, I had no reason to think about it. It started when my periods returned postpartum, and it's taken me several months to piece together the fact that I feel more anxiety, insomnia, muscle tension and HBP right before my period. Wow. I was even in the hospital two cycles ago for a doozy of an episode that really had me freaked. I also have a thyroid issue, but I've been told (after untold number of blood tests) that my thyroid levels are practically normal, and that the slight overfunction is "subclinical". Ok. Whatever. But it is true that my BP is normal the rest of the month without my doing anything different. It's never been excessively high, but 125/77 is high for me (normal is 95-100/66 or something). And I feel it. I thought some of the comments about progresterone and estrogen were interesting. It must be hormonal, and since pregnancy and childbirth really mess with hormones, it would make sense. The question is what to do about it. I find taking a calcium/magnesium supplement regularly throughout the day seems to help, and I also have a anti-anxiety med that I only take as needed (and it's only ever needed around that time!). If anyone knows of a reputable Dr. or company that does hormone testing, let us know? I did it once years and years ago - saliva testing - and found it really useful in understanding what was happening with my body.
