I went to the ER a week ago after suffering a pain level of 9 out of 10 for the previous 4 days in my abdomen (lower left, pain radiating straight back through buttock and down a little) coupled with on going chronic constipation. First off the constipation had started being an issue as of last April.

I went to a Med7 at one point (June?) due to the extreme constipation and level 5 pain and was given instructions to obtain Miralax, dulcolax and saline enemas and alternate their usage. The dr. There had no access to ultra sound or really any tools to see what was going on. Since I had told him it seemed to follow my periods somewhat he suggested the possibility of Endomitriosis and suggested I follow up with my regular Dr.

My regular Dr ignored my request to look into Endomitriosis although I pointed out that I even had complained to him that my cramping and periods had become increasingly worse over the prior year It's also important to point out that from April on I was under EXTREME stress due to being sexually harassed at my job so we both thought there was a large possibility it was due to the stress. He gave me a scrip for Linzess and sent me on my way.

The Linzess coupled and alternated with the other laxatives helped bring it from completely incapacitating to annoying but almost tolerable. Over time the constipation lessened though my bowel habits have never gotten back to normal. It seemed to ebb and flow and I did a lousy job of keeping track of when it was at its worst but since the pain lessened and at most points disappeared I just kept attributing it to the stress which also ebbs and flows (reported the harassment in August and hired a lawyer, was retaliated against by the company who choses to back the abuser - he's worth more $ to them than I, needless to say I was basically forced out of the company in October. Since it was a "voluntary" quit I have had to fight for unemployment and just got awarded so on top of everything I went through with this person hurting me and the company also hurting me I have been without a paycheck this entire time as well. Meanwhile counsel for the abuser is constantly throwing obstacles up in my way along the way - in other words the stress is not going to get better it's only going to get worse and it's been getting consistently worse with something that likely could drag out 2+ years).

So last Tuesday I end up in the ER with the level 9 pain and I can no longer deny at that point that I have a major issue because in addition to the pain (and causing it if I do) I am unable to eat due to the fact that nothing is coming out of this body with out major amounts of laxatives, it has to be completely liquid or I'm crying on the floor unable to function. I suspected a bowel obstruction (figured with the stress maybe the intestine was either twisting up or I had impacted fecal matter that obviously wasn't coming out with laxatives plus I was and always had been nervous about the possibility of becoming dependent on laxatives which is why I had tried everything else possible over the months since April including but not limited to increasing my fiber intake to 35+ grams per day (many days all I ate was fiber because I was so sick), using salt water flushes, several herbal colon cleanse powders and pills and even tried the master cleanse.

The Dr. Suspected kidney stones or a woman's related issue. In the end the tests came back showing I have on the left ovary a 7cm (size of an orange) endometrial ovarian cyst with septations. I also have two on the right side that are 2.5 cm each. Basically he gave me norco and sent me home with instructions to get a gyno consult in 30 days but did not address the issue of constipation other than to say it could be that the cyst was impeding on the colon (though they thought the bladder based on what they saw) or it could be endometrial tissue attached to it aggravating it.

I understood the idea was that in 30 days the cyst may reduce in size along with the hormones in my cycle however here I am week later and I'm still having the chronic constipation to the point I take dulcolax before bed, either a saline or glycerin enema in the am as well as an entire bottle of magnesium citrate EVERY DAY. That's just to keep the pain at a minimum so that I'm only in pain from about five in the morning until 2 PM when everything is out of my lower digestive tract.

So last Friday I scheduled and went in for an appointment with my regular doctor to bring him up to speed on what was going on. He was very hesitant to give me the Gyno consult I was asking for and started trying to imply that I had possibly put myself in a situation where I was reliant on laxatives. and that was the reason for the constipation. This frustrated me a lot because here I have evidence from the ER that did ultrasounds inside and out the verifying that there is a 7 cm cyst as well as Endomitriosis. I understand that there are a lot of cyst that are small that are not a problem every month but I believe a 7 cm cyst warrants some action especially when it's been an ongoing problem since April. I don't know if he was upset because I had brought up that I had insisted upon exploring the endomitriosis idea back in June when the other doctor told me I should and he didn't do it or what but he finally said he would give me the referral but since I don't have insurance he can't do it until I get insurance (this by the way is another added bonus to this whole situation is since I am unemployed I need Obamacare/Covered California and right now it is nearly impossible to sign up for and obtain coverage through that because 8 million people are doing so and they are having massive issues with sheer volume. I finally, yesterday, got that done but it looks like it's going to be 30 to 40 days before I get all my information in order to use it - if I'm one of the lucky ones who actually receives it without further complications. So in other words were looking at 30 to 60 days at minimum or longer until I get in to the gyno and then who knows how long to convince them to remove or drain this thing meanwhile going through what I'm going through right now (massive amounts of laxatives and excruciating pain, unable to leave the house) of course there's a possibility with my period coming going that the symptoms will lessen which I'm hoping for but what am I supposed to do in the meantime?!

I mean it can't be healthy for me to be on all these laxatives all the time I don't know what to do

Wow - you are dealing with a lot! I am sorry for that. This cyst sounds like it is unlikely to resolve on its own and should be monitored closely via ultrasound. It has the potential to cause ovarian torsion which could cause the ovary to die (not to mention intense pain). And you do not want to lose your ovary if you can help it. If it has to be removed, a surgeon with cystectomy skills would have the best chance of removing just the cyst and leaving your ovary intact (or at least enough tissue for hormonal production).

The constipation is concerning not to mention the awful pain you are in. How many days has it been since you had a bowel movement? Are you alternating the Miralax, Dulcolax, and saline enemas as recommended?

If you have endometriosis, endo implants or their adhesions can "infiltrate" the bowels causing elimination problems and possibly even obstruction as you mentioned. If you have to go into surgery, it would probably be good to get an endo specialist to do the surgery to see if you do have endo and remove all he/she can.

I hope things improve for you soon (medically and legally). Please keep us posted on how you are doing.

Thanks for the response I haven't been doing very well...

At this point I'm alternating the libzess, salt water flushes, glycerin suppositories and saline enemas. I'm really trying to stay away from the Dulcolax but I am also using that when needed and have a backup of a few bottles of magnesium citrate as well. I dumped the other ones because unless it absolutely makes it 100% liquid then it's not going to come out at all.

I have also been trying to steer clear of eating food which is a lot harder said than done especially in a situation where your body is craving nutrients because it's not getting any even if you do eat. A friend brought me over a bag of shake ologies and I started kind eating that mix the banana daily but the problem is it's still solid pack inside me. Starting today I'm going to go back on the master cleanse since it is the only thing that I've been able to tolerate but not eating is really a big struggle.

Yesterday I had a really scary thing happened when I was out somewhere I basically flushed: the upper half of my body felt really sick I was very very weak I couldn't even hold my head up I got really really super hot and I felt like I was going to faint. I hadn't at that point stopped eating so I know it wasn't due to lack of food but also I was supposed to start my period Wednesday and it hasn't happened yet (no possibility of pregnancy of course we did that test when I was at the ER). Then last night I felt the 7 cm mass like crazy which is new I never really felt it specifically, anyway it hurt like hell I felt like it was close to bursting but I don't know.

Meantime I've been jumping through hoops trying to get covered California my coverage won't start until February 1 so I can't go see anybody about this until then... I refuse to go get medical treatment if it's going to cost me an arm and a leg but I'm afraid something majors going to happen before February 1... Sad

Feeling like you are going to faint is scary. Bananas are part of the BRAT (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast) diet so bananas would seem to exacerbate your problem. Magnesium Citrate works pretty well for me (I use tablets or capsules but Milk of Magnesia may be more effective IDK). Hang in there. I hope these meds work their magic soon!!

Better laxatives
Hi! I have horrible constipation, gastroparesis, and PCOS as well. I used enemas every day for almost two years, but a year ago I found Oxypowder, which is the ONLY laxative that has ever worked for me, and then I found it's cheaper cousin called Mag 07. You can get both on Amazon. I really suggest these and my naturopath says they are safe for daily use long term if need be. I am also working to find better solutions, but just for day to day survival, I completely rely on these.

S Hello Sfaught, I just read your story today and I know exactly the pain you are describing. As your post was in 2014 and its the year 2016, I wondered if you can update what is the outcome if any solution was done to ease your pain of constipation and the 7cm cyst you had mentioned back then.
At the moment I have been to Emergency twice within a month. The first visit, then placed in Short Stay in te Emergency section of the hospital. I was given Endone. This tablet eases the pain of my very bad tummy cramps within an hour. I had an ultrasound scan as they thought it was my appendix. Then they found I had a couple of baby cysts on my ovary. The biggest was 2.5cm and the smallest was 1.5cm. Their conclusion was not the cysts. They concluded it was constipation and dehydration. I was sent home that afternoon, after being 8hours in total at the hospital. I was told to stop by the chemist and buy Coloxyl to relieve my constipation. It worked temporarily however my tummy cramps would appear and disappear. Then 3 weeks later, I got this pain all of a sudden. A tummy cramp so severe that it paralyzed my movement for at least 10minutes until I had 2 panadol tablets. Then I went back to Emergency after an hour as the pain did not disappear this time. The pain was a 9 out of 10. I was again given Endone. Except in 2 hours othing happened. They gave me another Endone then the pain eventually was an 8. I was admitted to Short Stay. As I went at night, I was held till the morning so they can do an ultrasound scan. This was done & I was told a Surgeon will see me and a Gynecologist. The Surgeon came and told me no operation needed as the he doesn't think the pain was that extreme. Then the Gyno just told the Emergency Dr, the biggest cyst is not big enough to do a Key Hole surgery. I was given a script for Endone (only 10) sent home that afternoon and I was told to alternative with nurofen and panadol. I was told to do this for 2 weeks and if the tummy cramps returns then I need to go back to Emergency. It's been a week today and with my strict routine medication myself I'm able to feel no pain but I've been severely constipated. Then I did some research on the natural and organic supplements. I found a natural laxatives called Cascara Sagrada. It's been 2 days and its helped. I've also bought Maca to help balance my hormones. I will see my GP soon to see if need a key hole surgery. I want to believe by taking a natural remedies hopefully in 3 months all my cysts will disappear including a change of diet. Wish me Luck.

Trigan,
I am glad to see someone posting on here recently. I too was curious about what ended up happening to her and what the outcome was as I too am going through something just like this....I have always had really heavy painful periods, I would take vicoden and lay on the couch w a heating pad and cry myself to sleep over the past year or so. I have been trying to get preg for quite some time so I have had a handful of tests done...back in Sept of 2015 my Dr did U/S to check my ovaries for cysts and there was nothing there, then in Jan 2016 I had a HSG to check for blocked tubes or scar tissue and nothing was there....March 3rd I had finally had more pain than I could handle so I broke down and went to the ER at 9:30pm, they did urine sample and the Dr was redicilous and told me I wouldnt have any answers that night as she was givin me pain meds and sending me home n to follow up w my Dr the next day, she said to me it was an emergency because I was in pain but to them it was not an emergency. I said please just do a ultrasound to make sure I don't have a cyst as Im scared of something going wrong if i do. She then told me that she didn't have anyone there to do a ultrasound and she would only call someone in from home to do it if it was an emergency....at this point I was pissed.....so then she orders blood work and a xray......seriously a xray?! Blood work came back with my white cell count was through the roof....then her whole attitude changed...oh there is deff something wrong so we gotta figure out what it is, its a good thing i didnt send you home....so she orders a CT scan, and finally gives me some pain meds hours after we had been there......CT scan came back w a 6.4cm cyst on my left ovary and 2 2.5cm cysts on my right. About 4:30am they admitted me and talked about surgery in the am.....Dr finally came in about 11:30am after she was done delivering babies all morning and we talked and after she found out I was wanting more kids she decided to do a Ultrasound....imaging that!!! I was livid as im going to be paying out of pocket for all the other tests the ER Dr did because my deductible is sooo high. Then she decided to send me home on antibiotics and pain meds to follow up w my Dr in 2 weeks, the pain meds made me so constipated even with taking stool softners daily that I had to stop taking my pain meds because I was in so much pain from being constipated. My Dr decided that since by the time I went back and seen him my pain had lessened some that my cyst was probably shrinking on its own and scheduled me for a ultrasound at the end of April to check the size of it. Well my period started the weekend after I seen my Dr and let me tell you what the pain I was in the whole time on my period was horrible! The Dr office said as long as I wasnt doubled over in pain to try to tough it out and wait. I understand their idea of waiting to avoid surgery so it wont cause unneeded damage but I worry that its getting bigger or could twist and cause more damage in the long run!? I don't know what to do??! Any Advice would be great!!! Sad
