Hello Doctor,

I am 30 & my wife 27. We wish to have a baby but still not successful. Though we make love everyday it does not end up with intercourse. Only once in a while we have proper intercourse. How do we increase our chances of having a baby.?

Ravik, you need to get semen into her vagina in the few days before the egg drops (ovulation). It does not matter how the semen gets there. Ovulation usually occurs 14 days before her next expected period. You don't explain how it is you make love but not have intercourse - one usually leads to the other. Is that reluctance on her part, difficulty on yours, or situational?

If you are unsure as to when your wife ovulates, you can purchase ovulation prediction sticks from a chemist. They detect a certain hormone in urine that is released just before and during ovulaion. Using these kits and having sexual intercourse in this window will help increase your chances of becoming pregnant.

Having intercourse every other day is better than everyday gives sperm time to mature.

Make sure your wife is taking folic acid now and until she reaches 12 weeks into the pregnancy. You should both eat a healthy well balanced diet, high in zinc as this will help with good sperm and egg production. Cut out smoking, drinking, drugs and reduce your caffeine intake. Make sure you are both of a healthy weight range and if not exercise and lose the extra weight as this can affect fertility

Hello and welcome to e health forum.

FYI, Pregnancy can occur, only when ejaculation occurs within the vagina, and when the woman is within the fertile period of your cycle. This period is from day 12 to day 16 of a 28 day menstrual cycle.

In addition, Pregnancy can occur, only when ejaculation occurs within the vagina. Normally during sex, when ejaculation occurs inside the vagina, about 3 ml of semen (with upto 60 million sperms per ml) is deposited inside the vagina, and most of it is ejected (pushed deep) into the uterus, through the cervix. But only thousands of capacitated sperms enter the fallopian tube and only 300-500 reach the ovum, and only one of those sperms can fertilize the ovum.

Dry humping (sexual foreplay with cloths on), Genital rubbing or Mutual masturbation - including vaginal fingering , hugging or foreplay without involving vaginal penetration & ejaculation does not result in pregnancy.

If you want to have a child, then your wife will need to have a watch on her menstrual cycle, and know the probable ovulatory phase. Unprotected intercourse with ejaculation in the vagina during the ovulatory phase will help in conception.

If you have any doubts or concerns consult your doctor or a sexologist and seek a proper medical opinion.
