genital herpes lying dormant in my system for years

User Profile
I have had unprotected sex a number of times in my life & while I am not proud of that, I have also never caught an STD or STI. I have been committed to one person for 2+ years, and have been tested for all major STDs multiple times. What's worrying me is that I read there is a possibility that I could have genital herpes lying dormant in my system for years before showing any initial outbreak symptoms. I have had unprotected sex with my partner and he has never had any issues to date. What is the possibility that I could have this disease without having any symptoms in the past 2+ years? I have never had a sore on my mouth or genitals, or anywhere else on my body, and no itching or burning. I don't know how or if I should get tested for HSV-2, as I've read it's difficult and often inaccurate to diagnose without existing sores or symptoms. I could get a blood test done but I am afraid it will show a false positive. Am I worrying for nothing?

Thank you for asking at Ehealth forum!

I read your question and i understand your concern. Herpes staying dormant not ever showing once is less likely. If you wanna know, getting serology and PCR for HSV will sort it out.

I hope it helps. Stay in touch with your healthcare provider for further guidance as our answers are just for education and counselling purposes and cannot be an alternative to actual visit to a doctor.
Take care
